Planers Buying Guide

What Type of Planer Do I Need?

Understanding the basics about planers will help you get the tool you need. Do you need a manual planer, a handheld power planer, or a thickness planer, or is a jointer what you really need? It all depends on how you intend to use it.

Let's start with the difference between a planer and a jointer. A planer is intended to smooth the two faces of a piece of wood and to reduce a board to the desired thickness, if necessary. A jointer smooths the edges of wood so that it will fit together smoothly without the slightest gap. An exception can be using a portable, handheld, power planer on edges of wood in building something such as a deck so that you do not have to carry the wood to your shop and then back to the construction area.

When you buy wood for a project, you can buy rough lumber, S2S wood, or S4S wood. For rough lumber that has not been smoothed on the faces or the sides, you will need a planer and a jointer. For S2S wood of the desired thickness that has been smoothed on the faces but not on the edges, you will need a jointer. For S4S wood of the desired thickness that has been smoothed on the faces and the edges, you will not need a planer or a jointer. A jointer is also used for wood that has a lot of bumps, blemishes, or that is warped. It is important to remember that the more pre-finishing that is done to the wood, the less work you will have to do, but the more you will pay for the wood.

Now, if you have determined that you want a planer, then you need to decide which type of planer you need. If you only intend to use a planer occasionally for repairs, such as doors that need a little trimming, then a manual planer run with your muscle power may be all you need. A handheld, power planer will save you time and effort on even these occasional projects, though.

A thickness planer is really for serious woodworkers and industrial use, where production time is also a major factor. Unlike a power planer, it is more expensive and is not portable.

A power planer may not be able to make as deep of cut at one time as a thickness planer, thus requiring more time to reduce wood down to the desired thickness, but it is portable and less expensive. A power planer is recommended for most people and projects.

What Are Possible Uses a Power Planer?

Power planers are very useful in helping to trim doors. When building a deck, power planers can help smooth edges and faces of boards so that they fit together well and are even. These planers will also help you chamfer railing and post edges using the notch on the front shoe. Some planers offer more than one notch with varying sizes available. You can also do rabbeting and tapering with a power planer. In addition to building decks, you can use power planers for building patio furniture or roof and garage repairs.

Features

Power planers vary in their size, the power of the motor, and their weight. For minimal repair work, a smaller planer is satisfactory. A 5- or 6-amp motor should supply you with enough power for most tasks. A stronger motor is recommended for building projects such as decks. A good weight for a power planet is six to eight pounds.

These planers can also vary in how deep they can cut and how the depth-of-cut is set. The depth-of-cut setting moves the front shoe up and down. Most use a large knob at the front that is also used as the front handle. Other models use a small dial. Choose the model that is most comfortable for you.

Look for power planers with double-edged, self-indexing knives and an automatic cutterhead lock. Another feature to look for or add if it is an option is a segmented cutterhead that has 1⁄2 inch wide segments with four cutting edges. Carbide blades are more durable than high-speed-steel blades.

Make sure your planer has a longer fence that can be set anywhere on the shoe to keep your cuts straight, a gauge that tells you the amount of wood that will be cut, and adjustable preset depth stops to prevent cutting a board too thin. Another feature that the best planers provide is control over the direction of chips. They also offer a dust bag or hose, and some provide bases that hold the planer upside-down to make it easier to use as a jointer. Kickstands that hold the blades away from the surface are recommended along with self-contained storage. Finally, check to see if the cord length is satisfactory.

Safety

The biggest safety reminder is to always remember that you are using a power tool with an exposed blade. Second, make sure the blade is at full speed before you start cutting, and hold it with both hands when cutting. Never sit it down until the blade has quit turning, and always be aware of the location of the cord. Make sure that your pathway is clear around your work area so that you can walk along as you cut on longer pieces. Finally, use the dust bag or hose to prevent flying chips and empty the bag often. If chips do start flying, the planer could be clogged. Turn it off, unplug it, and clear the clog immediately.

Maintenance

The most important maintenance task is to keep the blades sharp. The cuts will be better, and your project will proceed faster.
