Pool Chlorine Tablet Buying Guide

Pool Chlorine Tablet Image
Picture: 3 Inch Swimming Pool from In The Swim

Summertime means lots of fun in the pool, but it also comes with the responsibility of keeping the pool water properly cleaned and balanced. Fortunately, chlorine helps make this process relatively simple. There are numerous chlorine tablet options, so it's imperative to look for the best possible solution for your particular swimming pool. The good news is that selecting chlorine tablets doesn't have to be difficult, especially with this buying guide on your side!

Why Do You Need Chlorine?

For long-term pool owners, this probably sounds like a silly question. Keep in mind that new pool owners may not have the same wealth of knowledge, but everyone needs to be up to speed for pool season. If you're pool savvy, feel free to skip to the next section.

Chlorine is a sanitizing agent that prevents harmful bacteria and microorganisms from turning your swimming pool into their home. Without chlorine or another applicable water sanitizer, your pool water will soon become an uninviting cesspool that could make you ill.

It is also worth noting that too much chlorine can have detrimental effects. Helping you avoid this issue without putting your health at risk is one of the primary reasons we've compiled this pool chlorine tablets buying guide.

Basic Chlorine Tablet Options

Chlorine is available in multiple forms, ranging from 1" tablets to liquid. The first step in your chlorine tablet buying journey is to look through these various forms and select the type that's best for your pool.

1" Chlorine Tablets

The size of your swimming pool typically determines the size of chlorine tablets you will need. The 1" variety is most commonly used in spas and smaller pools.

PROS

  • Easier to measure out the quantity of chlorine going into your pool.
  • Easier to avoid overly chlorinating the water.
  • Can be used in any pool or spa.
  • Dissolves much more quickly than 3" tablets, which means you can get back in the pool faster.

CONS

  • The typical range is 25 of these 1" tablets for every 10,000 gallons, so you might be feeding an exorbitant number of tablets to your pool.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Swim spas, therapy pools, small portable pools and hot tubs.

3" Chlorine Tablets

The 3" chlorine tablets are preferred by many consumers because they require fewer overall tablets. On the downside, pool owners are more likely to make a mistake by adding too much chlorine to the water if they only use 3" tablets. Due to this, you need to carefully consider your size options in relation to the total number of gallons you wish to treat.

PROS

  • It takes less time to add all of the necessary chlorine to your pool.
  • Ideal size for chemical feeders and floaters.
  • Disperses the correct amount for most swimming pools.
  • You can choose between 3" tablets and 3" sticks.
  • Created to serve all medium-sized swimming pools, which is the average size of a home swimming pool.

CONS

  • The 3" tablets take longer to dissolve, which means you won't be able to get back in the pool as quickly.
  • Adding too many 3" tablets will lead to significant over chlorination much more quickly than using too many 1" tablets.
  • Could be too powerful for smaller pools and spas.

RECOMMENDED FOR: All standard, medium-sized home swimming pools.

Alternatives to Tablets

Chlorine tablets are the most commonly used water sanitizing solution, and they're also the most recommended. However, it would be remiss to not at least mention your other options.

1. Liquid Chlorine

- This is the most popular option for large, commercial pools. It's similar to household bleach, but the formula is more concentrated. On the downside, liquid chlorine is much harder to properly measure out and disperse into your pool. As a result, pools with liquid chlorine in them are prone to becoming under or overly chlorinated.

2. Granular Chlorine

- Although you could use granular chlorine for your regular pool chlorine, it's not recommended. Instead, this highly concentrated burst of chlorine is best used for shock treatments. It raises chlorine levels very quickly, but you will need to use a large amount. To get the best overall results, you should use tablets for your regular chlorination needs.

3. Salt Chlorine

- Some people turn to a salt chlorine system. To make this work, you will need to purchase and install the system, and you'll also need to use approximately 250 pounds of salt for every 10,000 gallons. The initial set up can be cost prohibitive for some pool owners. Quite frankly, it's also way less complicated to add some chlorine tablets than it is to add such a large quantity of salt to the water.

As you can see, salt chlorine, granular chlorine and liquid chlorine all have some pretty big downsides that can be avoided by sticking with chlorine tablets. Of course, when it comes to shocking your pool, granular chlorine does provide quick results.

Selecting Chlorine Tablets

Now that you know the basics about chlorine tablets and other alternatives, it's time to narrow down your options. At this point, you should already have a good idea if 1" or 3" tablets seem most appropriate for pool. Availability and pricing will now become the next deciding factor.

It's impossible to give you a firm recommendation based on availability and price because these factors can vary greatly by vendor and from season to season. Therefore, we suggest taking at look at 1" and 3" tablets annually if price is a big concern. You will typically get a much better deal if you buy in bulk. For example, buying 50 pounds worth of tablets is often cheaper than buying two 25-pound containers.

Lifespan of Chlorine Tablets

We've just pointed out that buying in bulk often brings the overall price of chlorine tablets down. The next thing to consider is whether or not you'll actually use all of the tablets before they expire.

The good news is that chlorine tablets have a typical shelf life of three to five years. The trick to getting the longest lifespan out of pool chlorine tablets is proper storage. These tablets need to be kept in a well-ventilated, dry and cool space. Many people choose to store their excess tablets in their basement, especially when it's not pool season.

Ask yourself the following questions before buying in bulk:

1. Will I use all of these tablets this year?
2. If not, do I have a proper storage space available?
3. Can I commit to transporting the excess tablets to the proper storage area in a timely manner?

If you're not going to use every tablet but you can't store it or move it quickly enough, it makes more financial sense to not buy in bulk. Otherwise, bulk pricing is almost always going to save you a lot of money in the long run.

Choosing a Brand

Much like pricing and availability, brands can come and go. There are a few standards that have been in business for many years, including Robelle, Clorox and In The Swim. These brands tend to get positive consumer reviews, but you can also find plenty of evidence that consumers are happy with many newer brands too. Your best bet is to determine your budget and what type of tablets you want. From there, you can narrow down the available products, take a look at reviews and then select your chlorine tablets for the season.

It may take a bit of trial and error to find the perfect chlorine tablet size and brand, but with this guide on your side, you should be able to make the right decision with relative ease. Happy swimming!
