Portable Air Tank Buying Guide

A portable air tank is a tool that compresses air under a very high amount of pressure. It converts electric power into an energy form. It does this by compressing the air that is stored in these tanks using incredibly high pressure.

Unlike the construction-grade air tanks, portable air tanks are very lightweight and easy to carry. They're a staple in many shops and garages as well as residences. If you're considering buying a portable air tank, but you're not sure what you need, read on.

Portable Air Tank Buyer's Guide
Why Use a Portable Air Tank

There are several practical reasons to have a portable air tank on hand. Even if you don't typically use tools in your daily life, they can be a good thing to have as a backup. Reasons to have a portable air tank include:

  • Carry it in your car in the event of a flat tire.
  • Use it around the house as a spray tool or nail driving device
  • It's very versatile, and you can use it for a variety of projects
  • Very few moving parts, so it's a solid investement
Portable Air Tank Classes

Portable air tanks generally come in three different classes according to how powerful they are. Each classification is best used in a different setting, and it's important that you find the best one for your intended use.

Low-Pressure Portable Air Tanks

A low-pressure portable air tank is an air tank that has a maximum pressure discharge of 150 PSI or lower. They're very compact and portable tools. You usually find them in shops or household garages. They're great for common domestic problems like inflating a car tire, airbrush painting, or triggering a nail gun.

Medium-Pressure Portable Air Tanks

A medium-pressure portable air tank is an air tank that comes with a maximum pressure discharge of 1,000 PSI down to 150 PSI. They generally have a more heavy-duty build. This build adds weight and makes it more difficult to move them around. These types of portable air tanks are usually found in workshops or commercial work sites.

High-Pressure Portable Air Tanks

The final classification of portable air tanks is the high-pressure portable air tank. This type of tank is very heavy and difficult to move around easily. It has a discharge of 1,000 PSI and up. You can generally find these types of air tanks in construction sites, industrial shops, and demolition sites.

Single Stage or Double Stage

When you've picked out the class of portable air tank you want to buy, you have to choose between a single or double stage air tank. They both work well for several projects or uses.

Single Stage Air Tank

The single stage air tank uses pistons to compress the air, and they're very popular for smaller shop or home use. They use a gasoline engine or an electric motor to drive the piston. In turn, this piston compresses the air and forces it to move into the storage tank. It keeps forcing air in and forcing the tank's pressure to rise. When the pressure hits a certain peak, the air tank shuts off. It starts to run again as you use the compressed air.

Double Stage Air Tank

The double stage air tank uses two pistons to compress the air instead of one. They're popular for heavy-duty use or if someone wants to run multiple tools from it at once. The first piston compresses the air and forces it to a check valve. When it hits this check valve, it goes to the second piston. This piston compresses the air further and forces it into the storage tank. The tank's pressure rises until it hits a certain point. When it hits this point, it shuts off until you use the stored air.

Important Air Tank Considerations

No matter which type of air tank you choose, there are several important considerations that you want to look for to ensure that your tank can do everything you need it to do without an issue.

Does your air tank come with any accessories? These accessories can include various hose attachments and hose extenders. These hose attachments can make it quick and easy to use your portable air tank for different uses. Some also come with a carrying case, so it's easy to keep everything together.

The CFM stands for cubic feet per minute. Simply put, it's the volume or the amount of the air velocity that passes through your air tank's hose at any given time. You can compare it to a water hose where it's easy to measure the exact quantity of water that passes through in 60 seconds. The higher CFM your air tank has, the more air it can force through the hose.

Your air tank's horsepower is how powerful the motor is. If you plan to work on smaller projects or use it in an emergency to inflate a tire, you can get away with having the lower horsepower. Obviously, if you intend to use it with more heavy-duty projects, you want a higher horsepower amount.

How easy is your air tank to move? Generally, portable air tanks are easier to move because they're smaller and more lightweight. However, you do want to make sure that the handle is easy to grip. You may want to look for a portable air tank with wheels so you can wheel it from place to place instead of picking it up and carrying it.

Power Source

Generally, there are two different types of power sources you can choose from. They both have good and not so good points associated with choosing one over the other.

  • Electric- An electric portable air tank is one of the more popular models. They run off of electricity and generally require less maintenance than their gas-powered counterparts. Many standard ones use a 120-volt outlet to run, and they run quietly. You can run them wherever you have a dry place and electricity.
  • Gasoline- If you have limited power, or if you plan to use your air tank outside, a gasoline powered one is most likely a better choice. These models usually generate a higher PSI than electric ones, and they typically give you more horsepower. However, there are fumes, so you can't use them in an enclosed space without good ventilation.
  • PSI

Your air tank's PSI means pounds per square inch. It measures the amount of pressure that your portable air tank is capable of producing per square inch of space. This is important if you want your air tank to be able to handle heavier jobs, and it's more important for industrial or commercial air tanks. Most home tanks have a PSI of 150 or lower.

    Tank Size

Your air tank's tank is the place where the compressed air is stored until you use it. Portable air tanks have a tank size that ranges from one to 10 gallons. The most popular size is six gallons. Smaller tanks are easier to carry around, but you won't get the horsepower or compression that you'll get with the slightly larger ones.
