Portable Basketball Hoop Buying Guide

Whether you play for fun or use your driveway for serious competitive practice, having a quality basketball goal is a worthwhile investment. There are a lot of factors to consider, and the number of options available can seem daunting if you don't already know exactly what you're looking for.

To help make things easier, this portable basketball hoop buying guide will break down all of the most important things you need to know. After reading this guide, you'll be ready to start shopping for your perfect basketball goal.

Types of Hoops

1. In-ground

If you're looking for a portable hoop, it's important to understand that this isn't the only type of goal that people can purchase for their homes. When you're shopping, be sure that you aren't looking at in-ground systems by mistake. These are stationary and require cement installation.

2. Mounted

Wall-mounted hoops are a more portable option, but they are generally also not intended to be moved much once they're initially installed. They're good for saving space and can be moved if necessary, but they are often not as functional as true, portable hoops.

3. Portable

A portable hoop is similar in appearance to an in-ground one with the exception of a base that allows for easy movement and storage as necessary. These are obviously less stable than in-ground or mounted goals, so it's important to make sure they are weighted down well before using one.

Backboard: Material and Size

If you're an experienced player, you know that backboard construction does make a difference. The size and materials all work together to create a different playing experience.

Sizing

At the professional level, 72 inches is the standard backboard size. If this is too large for your driveway, backboards do come in much smaller sizes. Typically, 44-54 inches is small enough to fit comfortably in a standard driveway. Most often, a 60-inch backboard is an ideal compromise between a comfortable fit and playing close to regulation.

1. Glass

Most professional-level hoops have a glass backboard. This is because it offers the best rebound factor, which refers to the angle and distance that can be achieved by the ball bouncing off of the board. Glass backboards are best for highly competitive play, and they have the greatest potential for breaking.

2. Acrylic

Acrylic backboards are clear like their glass counterparts but much sturdier. They're most often used for competitive play, but they don't offer quite as much rebound as glass.

3. Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate backboards are usually cheaper than glass or acrylic, but they're not well-suited to professional or competitive-level play due to the low levels of rebound they offer. These are best for kids or those who simply want a recreational hoop for occasional play.

4. Composite

Composite wood backboards can usually be found at parks or on recreation-only hoops. They offer very low levels of rebound, but they can be found in a variety of styles and colors.

Key Components

1. Rim

The rim takes a lot of abuse, so it's important to be sure your hoop has one that can withstand the type of play it's being used for. Regulation-sized rims are 18 inches in diameter, so this is the most common size you will find when shopping. In addition, most come with built-in breakaway mechanisms that keep the backboard from shattering when a player dunks the ball.

Standard rims are actually the least common ones seem on hoops today. You'll find them most often on portable goals, but they have no spring system in them, so they are the most likely to warp, bend or break if they're used for rough play or dunking.

Exposed-spring hoops are the most common for recreational play. The spring-loaded breakaway mechanism is exposed to the elements, which means that a hoop that stays outside permanently may end up with rusty springs over time. Serious players also complain that these often make the rims too bouncy.

Enclosed-spring hoops are the most expensive but generally considered the best quality. The spring mechanism is encased in a metal cover to protect it from wear and weather, which makes it last longer. These rims are also usually not as bouncy, which is why they're generally found on top-tier systems.

2. Pole

The pole on a portable hoop can come with one, two or three support pieces. Contrary to what you might think, the general rule of thumb is that having fewer support pieces offers more stability. This is usually why in-ground hoops have only one support pole.

When shopping for a portable hoop, it's preferable to find one that has a two-piece support pole. These are sturdier and generally of a better quality. Three-piece supports tend to only be found on cheaper portable systems.

3. Height Adjustment

For some people, height adjustment isn't a big factor because they only play at regulation height. However, if your portable hoop is for recreational play or the whole family, it's wise to get a system that can be lowered when necessary.

Adjustable systems usually offer a range between 7.5-10 feet and use simple crank systems to raise or lower the goal.

Other Considerations

1. Padding

While padding is optional, if you're playing aggressively or have children to worry about, it's usually good to invest in pole and backboard padding to minimize accidents. Many portable hoops have padding options included with the system.

2. Stabilizing the Base

Portable systems have bases that must be filled with something to weigh down the goal and keep it stable. Most often, people use cement blocks, sand or water. Of the three, water is the least expensive option but also the least preferable. Water can evaporate over time, which increases the chances of the goal tipping. Sand bags are the easiest alternative, but heavy bricks or blocks are an equally sturdy option.

If you do use water, it's recommended that you add a small amount of antifreeze to the base in cold weather so that it doesn't freeze into ice and crack the plastic. You should also check the water levels regularly to ensure maximum stability.

3. Extension

"Extension" refers to how far the backboard is situated in front of the pole. More extension means less chance of running into the pole. Regulation hoops have a four-foot extension, but even recreational players should look for a similar distance to keep everyone on the court safe.

Make Those Hoop Dreams Come True

Now that you understand all of the basic components of what to look for when buying a portable basketball hoop, you're ready to start shopping. Keep the tips from this buying guide handy, and you'll be able to turn your driveway into your own personal basketball court in no time.
