Queen Air Bed Buying Guide

Sick of sleeping on the couch when you travel? Want to offer your guests something more comfortable than just the floor? You may not be able to carry a queen mattress with you everywhere or upgrade your guest room quite yet, but an air mattress can fill in the gaps nicely. We’ve put together a guide for choosing the best queen size air mattress so you can start sleeping comfortably again and stop refusing invitations.

How Do I Choose A Queen Air Mattress?

Honestly, these considerations apply to many sizes of the air mattress. If you aren’t careful, you’ll have something that never gets used. You want comfort and support, ease of use, and packs well for storage.

Low Versus High Rise

A low rise air mattress is your classic air mattress. It has a single layer and is excellent for storage purposes. If you don’t often use an air mattress, a single layer might be more convenient for storage and carrying (especially if you travel by air a lot). The downside is that they aren’t as supportive. If you sleep on one long enough, you’re going to develop the same types of pain as you would on the couch.

High rise air mattresses are double layered. They aren’t as convenient for inflating or storage, but they feel a lot like a traditional memory foam mattress (the well made high rise ones, anyway). If you frequently have guests and leave your air mattress out, this is a good option until you choose to upgrade to a real bed. Your guests won’t feel as many aches.

EZ Beds

They may not be as common, but EZ beds are air mattresses with a small metal frame underneath. This makes them more supportive while still maintaining a single layer. Most have one push inflation and the legs unfold underneath. The downside to these is they aren’t very common, and more moving pieces can break.

The thickness of the PVC or vinyl material determines how long the mattress will last under regular use. If you’re larger or taller than average, you may want to increase the thickness of the material to accommodate the extra. Mattresses within the 0.4 to 0.6 mm range often perform better than ones with less thickness, but won’t be as bulky as ones with more.

Well-made seams must accompany thickness. Check reviews for air mattresses to determine if seams are well enforced or cheaply glued. If users seem to have more leaks than usual, this is a good indication that the seaming is flimsy. Thickness won’t matter if air leaks out of poor seam construction.

Another source of leakage is around the pump connection. The opening should seal tightly and preferably twice, one to close the hole and another to secure it. The pressure in the mattress will change as temperatures change and a small amount of leakage is inevitable, but you shouldn’t end up on the floor after only one night.

Comfort is one of the most critical aspects of an air mattress. The mattress should be supportive enough for short-term use if it’s a single layer and supportive enough for long-term use for double layers.

One common issue is air currents and circulation. The classic air mattress material is notoriously cold because air pockets within the mattress transmit the temperature of the room, but the material itself isn’t breathable. If you’re sweating because of the material and a cold air current hits the mattress, it’s uncomfortable.

Mattresses that have material toppers to reduce the amount of air currents circulating directly to your skin are a good idea. Some also have fabrics that encourage breathability to keep you from sweating as much.

The mattress should also have supported edges. It may not be as supportive as your regular mattress, but you shouldn’t immediately roll off the edge as you get near it. Make sure that the structural integrity of the sides and the middle are comparable or it won’t matter how big your mattress is.

Weight distribution is another aspect. Many queen air mattresses have inner chambers that inflate separately from the main chamber. These mimic inner springs in a conventional mattress. Your weight will distribute more evenly, and there won’t be as much sinkage.

For some, the traditional vinyl and PVC of air mattresses are toxic. Although it’s possible to find air mattresses with alternate materials, most of them are prohibitively expensive and hard to find.

The off-gassing experienced by yourself and guests isn’t too harmful for a short period of time. Consider purchasing a mattress topper if you’d like to put some distance between yourself and the plastic materials to avoid off-gassing or odors.

One feature you should consider is a mattress with its own pump. You won’t have to scramble to find a pump at your destination, and you won’t get stuck blowing it up by mouth. That can test the lung power of even the healthiest individual.

Some air mattresses get fancy. You can have a built-in LED to help light up your path during the night. Some have built-in USB chargers right on the bed, so you have a space for your phone or other devices.

One extra feature that may be worth it to you is a pressure sensor that detects pressure changes. A small amount of pressure loss is reasonable, but the sensor can signal the bed to re-inflate and adjust.

The Takeaway

If you aren’t to a point where you can deck out your guest room (or your living room is your guest room), a queen air mattress is the perfect alternative to the floor or couch. Many of them are ultra supportive and can be disassembled easily for storage when guests leave. If you get a single layer, you can carry a bed with you wherever you go and sleep better regardless of the conditions of your destination.

Where are you planning to take your queen mattress next? Is it also for your own guestroom? Let us know in the comments below.
