Reading Magnifier Buying Guide

Your desire to read didn’t diminish with your eyesight. Reading may be frustrating right now, but life is about to get better.

Reading magnifiers are the key to enjoying reading as you used to without the discomfort. If this is your first reading magnifier, read on to find out how to choose and what type may be the right one for you.

How To Choose A Reading Magnifier

There are a few different styles and features that may interest you. Let’s take a look.

Magnifier Styles

If all you can think about is a monocle, you’re in luck. Loupes are one style of a magnifier, but they do require that one of your hands be occupied holding it up to your face. Ditto with rectangular handheld magnifiers.

The next level is a hands-free magnifier. Some of these look like glasses. Others are rectangular pieces that fit on top of the page and magnify as you look down. Still others are magnifying stands that resemble lamps but bend down to fit between your eyes and the book.

Smaller, handheld magnifiers are convenient if you’re out and want to read discretely. They can fit into a pocket or a purse without taking up a lot of space. They aren’t cumbersome. The downside is they don’t cover a lot of the page, and the ones you hold directly to your eye prevent you from using both hands to keep the book open.

Full page magnifiers are great for packing with you in larger luggage or keeping on your desk. They cover the entire page of the book but are still easy to move from place to place. They don’t pack up as well as smaller magnifiers, but if you do most of your reading in your house, it isn’t hard to move them from room to room.

If you have one dedicated reading spot, lamp style magnifiers may be the best choice. These are entirely hands-free but can be cumbersome to move around. These are best if you limit most of your reading to a particular spot that can support a lamp style magnifier.

Digital or Electric Magnifiers

Some magnifiers rely on digital enhancement for magnification purposes. If you need your magnifier for work and want customization, these may be a good choice.

They work by using computer algorithms or digital enhancement features to bring the text to your correct line of vision. They can be very expensive, as one downside, and some have limitations to the types of materials they’ll enhance.

It’s not always just about the magnifier itself. Some have other features that can make the reading experience a lot more comfortable.

Lamp style magnifiers are particularly good at providing light. They offer a soft beam of light that comes from underneath so as you’re reading, you don’t get light into your eyes. If you like to read in different types of environments, some have dimmable lights so you can adjust as your environment changes.

Magnification Level

You aren’t a jeweler. You’re reading a text. A more powerful magnifier means you won’t be able to see as much of the text area and you’ll have to hold it closer to the page, which can be very uncomfortable.

2x magnifiers are a goods starting point. You can play with the balance between magnification and field of view. Higher isn’t always better or more convenient. Most readers hover between two and five times magnification because that allows them to hold the magnifier further from their faces and see more of the entire page as they read.

Size Of The Lens

How portable do you want your magnifier? If you read mostly on the subway, a smaller lens may be more convenient for you because it takes up less storage space. You can’t haul your enormous, hands-free magnifier onto the bus (well, you could, but why?) but you can get a small, pocket-sized magnifier to stash just about anywhere.

Reading mostly at home means you can go for larger, full-sized magnifiers. These are easier because you see all the text similar to the way you would if you were reading without a magnifier. It accommodates reading styles better because you don’t have to go line by line as you move your magnifier.

Comparable to lens size above, the weight of your magnifier depends on your needs. Light handhelds are for travel and portability. Heavier hand-free magnifiers are best for home.

Some magnifiers are meant for placing directly on the page. They weigh pages down, so you spend less time trying to keep the book open and maneuver your magnifier. As a home tool, this type is a good option. For a commuter, it may not work.

Reading outside is a pain if sunlight keeps catching on your lens and preventing you from seeing the text whether it’s magnified or not. Lenses with anti-glare coatings reduce the amount of light that bounces off the magnifier. They also allow light to pass through easily so in low light conditions you aren’t struggling as much with poor reflection. Coatings can add expense, but it shouldn’t be too much more than a standard magnifier.

Do I Really Need A Magnifier?

Even if you aren’t experiencing a loss of vision clarity, magnifiers can significantly ease the strain on your eyes. Reading for long periods of time, particularly in low light (hello bed readers!) can fatigue eyes, causing headaches and sometimes dizziness. You can relieve that tension with a gentle magnifier, so your eyes work less, and you get to read more comfortably.

The Takeaway

Magnifiers can help you read a bit more comfortably and feed your reading habit without the accompanying headaches and eye fatigue. There are styles to fit any type of circumstances you might need whether it’s on the go or in your favorite reading nook.

Where do you do most of your reading? Are you a reading nook person or are you more of a read on the go person? Let us know in the comments.
