What Is a Reciprocating Saw?

Reciprocating saws are commonly called the "Demo Tool." The first reciprocating saw was developed in 1951 by the Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation. It was called the Sawzall Reciprocating Saw. Sawzall is a term that is still used today when discussing this type of tool, regardless of the brand or model. A reciprocating saw is a powerful tool that can be used to cut through most building material: wood, metal, stucco, plaster, screws or nails embedded in wood. While they can be used to cut through concrete or stone, there are other more efficient tools for that purpose. Reciprocating saws allow you to reach tight spaces that are not accessible by circular saws. Their blades are longer and thicker than jig saws, allowing flush cuts to be made more safely and accurately. When working overhead or on a ladder, a reciprocating saw is much easier and safer to maneuver than a circular saw.

What Should I Look For In a Reciprocating Saw?

  • Power Level and Speed
The amount of power available in power tools is measured in voltage and amps. Projects that require a reciprocating saw, by definition, require a significant amount of power. Of course, the more power in the saw, the higher the price. Look for a saw with a voltage rating of at least 18 volts. Anything less will cause frustration with the length of time required to make simple cuts. The amperage rating for your new saw should be 7.5 amps or higher. The saw will bog down when using it on heavy duty projects. Most reciprocating saws are equipped with a variable speed trigger. Cutting through pipes or thick metal requires a slower blade speed to avoid overheating of the blade. You should be able to use the full speed of the saw when cutting through wood. When you reach nails or screws you can easily adjust the speed as needed.
  • Ergonomics
Reciprocating saws are heavier than most power tools. If you're going to be using the was for extended periods weight will definitely be a factor. Most reciprocating saws weigh between 7 to 10 pounds. Reciprocating saws produce a lot of vibration. This vibration can cause muscle soreness and fatigue. Some saws are manufactured with an anti vibration system, which separates motor and blade vibration from the body and handle of the saw. Soft rubberized grips is a feature that you should look for when buying your saw. Reciprocating saws require two hands to operate. Hold and maneuver the saw for a while to make sure the grips are comfortable for you. Some grips are designed for users with large hands. The saw should feel stable and natural when you are operating it.
  • Corded vs Cordless
The obvious advantage of cordless tools is their portability and the fact that you don't need to drag an extension cord around. If you need continuous power without taking time to change and recharge batteries, the corded saw is the logical choice. Remember also that batteries add weight to the tool.
  • Price
Reciprocating saws run from about $80 to over $400. When purchasing pay close attention to what is included with the saw. Are you buying a kit or is it just the bare tool? You may have to buy blades, batteries and chargers. If you own other cordless power tools, batteries and chargers from the same brand are usually interchangeable.

1-The DeWalt DWE304

The DeWalt 304 features a 10 amp motor and is designed for heavy duty work. It is a corded saw with variable speed trigger control, giving you up to 2,800 strokes per minute. It's versatility is enhanced with a 4 position blade clamp allowing it to be configured to make clean flush cuts. Weighing only 7 pounds,it can be comfortably used for overhead or ladder work. The lever action blade clamp lets you change blades without requiring any tools. While there are no saw blades included, this saw is still the best value for home improvement and DIY projects.

2-Black and Decker BDCR 20B

This reasonably priced cordless reciprocating saw is great for a light to medium work load around the home. It requires a 20 volt Lithium ion battery. The battery and charger are not included in the purchase price. If you have to buy these items it will most likely double your cost. However, if you have other Black and Decker 20 volt cordless tools, the batteries are interchangeable. It works well for trimming branches or cutting down small trees up to 3 inches in diameter. The unit comes with one saw blade and features a tool free blade change clamp. It has a comfortable soft grip handle, variable speed trigger and weighs less than 5 pounds.

3-Milwaukee 2720-20 M18 Sawzall

The Milwaukee 2720-20 has been touted as the best cordless reciprocating saw on the market. With it's ergonomic design and soft grip handle, this well balanced tool is built to reduce fatigue with extended use. The ten pound weight of the tool makes it difficult to operate over extended periods. The saw requires an 18 volt, 9 amp battery (battery and charger not included). Milwaukee has introduced Red Lithium "smart" batteries. Using their innovative Red Link Plus Intelligence system the battery and charger communicate with each other so that the battery will not overcharge, which causes diminished battery life. In addition, the battery talks to the saw and stops the tool from operating when it is approaching complete discharge. This technology increases the life of the battery. These batteries also have twice the run time of traditional Lithium ion batteries. You should be able to use this heavy duty saw for a full day without needing to recharge the battery.

4-Bosch RS7

The Bosch RS7 is an 11 amp corded saw built to last. It does not have a vibration control system but the soft ergonomic grip and weight of only 8.5 pounds make it comfortable to use over a moderate length of time. For a few dollars more you can order the kit and get 10 saw blades included. The RS7 has a variable speed trigger for improved control and a saw hook, sometimes called a rafter hook.

5-DeWalt DCS380B Max Li-Ion

Powered by a 20 volt Lithium Ion battery (battery and charger not included), the DeWalt DCS380B is a popular choice for professionals or homeowners. The 4 position blade clamp provides the ability to make cuts in difficult to reach places. Equipped with a variable speed trigger the DeWalt Max can operate at a speed of up to 3,000 strokes per minute. While the saw is reasonably priced it is sold as a bare tool. Therefore, it is necessary to buy a battery, charger and blades which probably puts it out of the price range for the every day hobbyist.

Milwaukee 2420-20 M12 Hackzall

The Hackzall is a lightweight (2.5 pounds) cordless saw designed to be used with one hand. It requires a 12 volt Lithium ion battery. The saw is sold with a charger, but the battery must be purchased separately. It is possible to use 12 volt batteries from other Milwaukee cordless tools. It has a shorter stroke length than bigger saws, but still is able to reach 3,000 strokes per minute for fast cutting through most materials. It is a well balanced tool with a soft grip handle which reduces muscle fatigue. The Hackzall will also accept Sawzall blades. This saw is perfect for medium sized around the house remodeling or demolition tasks.
