Rubber Landing Net Buying Guide

Rubber Landing Net Image
Picture: Fly Fishing Landing Soft from SF

As a fisherman, the first thing you need to do is decide what kind of equipment you need. If you’re looking to hook some fish to grill them up, it doesn’t really matter to the fish what kind of landing net you use. However, if you are a catch and release fisherman, then you need a rubber landing net because they are better for both the fish and for the sport of fishing for several reasons, two of which I’ll discuss here. One of the most important reasons to use a rubber landing net is because it is less stressful for the fish. Hopefully at this point in your sport, you are aware that fish skin is covered in mucus. This layer of what looks like slime protects the fish from various bacteria, fungus, and parasites. I know you’re probably thinking, what does any of that have to do with rubber netting? The answer is that landing nets made out of things like nylon remove a lot of this slime. Rubber landing nets remove less, and as such, increases the chances of survival after being caught. Another reason you might consider rubber is that it saves you time. Most fishermen use more than one hook as droppers or tags. Once a fish is netted, the second hook almost always gets tangled in the net, which can be frustrating because it has to be untangled. Not only does this reduce the chance of the fish surviving after being caught, it takes longer for the fish to be released and for you to start fishing again. Rubber nets all but eliminate this problem, so if you’re serious about your sport, you should really look into these products, even though they tend to cost a little bit more, they have benefits that make the price worth it. The type of landing net you use really depends on the kind of game you’re after and the situation you’re in. One of the most recommended nets on the market is the Fishpond Nomad Fly Fishing Net. Sure, it’s a little pricier than some of the nets we’ll discuss later on, but considering how many times you may have to replace a cheaper net, this model pays for itself as it is most likely the only net you’ll have to buy. The first perk of this model is that it can be used in both fresh and saltwater environments. The handle and hoop of the Nomad consist of a carbon fiber and fiberglass composite material, making it lightweight, strong, and impact resistant. Even if you decide to go with the largest model they offer, it is light enough to use with one hand. In addition, the handle on the Nomad is coated in rubber, making it easier to hang on to your fish, which is after all, the entire point. Not only that, one of the coolest features of this model is that if you do happen to drop it in the water, it floats. Making the Nomad even more durable is that the composite material its made of is both waterproof and UV protected, so that even if it does get beaten up from years of use, it won’t become weathered, making it a model that can last decades. The bag of the Nomad is comprised of the highest quality wide-meshed rubber, which means that unlike other rubber landing nets, it retains its shape under water, which gives the fish plenty of room to move around in, and you plenty of options for picture taking. Without knowing what you intend to use this equipment for, I have to recommend a good, all-purpose net. The Nomad Mid-Length net is your best bet because it is the most versatile of all the models, which is probably why its also the most popular. The Nomad Mid-Length is 37 inches in all, so its adequate for kayaks and canoes, but not too long for wade fishing. As Goldilocks would say, the Nomad Mid-Length is just right for any game and circumstance. However, those just getting into fly fishing might not want to spend too much on their equipment just yet, and that’s understandable. That’s why, we’re going to go over some cost friendly options. A great, budget-friendly landing net is the EGO Backwater Trout net. The net isn’t much to look at, but it has the important things in this case: it’s cheap, sturdy, and arguably even more important, it is fish friendly. The EGO has a composite handle and hoop, making the measure net strong and lightweight. The handle is also non-slip, which, dealing with water and thrashing fish, is super important. Like the Nomad, the EGO comes in a variety of sizes, the most versatile of which is the Backwater Trout net. It’s about twenty-six inches in length and weighs less than one pound. Because it weighs so little, its easy to take with you anywhere. This model also has a zip on, rubberized net bag that is fish friendly. Not only that, because you can remove it, it makes cleaning and replacing the bag much easier. The last feature I want to discuss is the measuring tape that is built into the bottom of the bag. This design allows you to measure the fish without having to even remove it from the water. All in all, the EGO Backwater Trout net is designed to do everything you need, without any of the hassle. There are many different landing nets on the market, and each one of them is designed with specific uses in mind. Rubberized nets are for the fisherman are for those that are concerned overall with being fish-friendly. These nets are lined in latex, protecting the slime that protects the fish. In addition, these nets do not absorb water, making them easier to shake off, and they reduce the fish smell on the ride home. If you’re environment conscious, a rubber landing net is for you.
