Secure Mailbox Buying Guide

Identity theft is on the rise all over the world. This can make people think about tightening up their security measures when it comes to protecting their identities. One of the easiest ways to do this is by protecting your mail. You get tons of sensitive documents that are just waiting to be stolen if they're left unsecured. This is where a secure locking mailbox comes in.

We'll walk you through all of the essential considerations that you want to keep in mind when you're considering a secure mailbox upgrade. This way, you'll be confident that you made an excellent choice that will help to keep your identity safe.

Secure Mailbox Buying Guide

The first thing that you have to do is decide what type of secure mailbox you want to buy. This will help you narrow down your choices so you can compare them easier. It's best to check with your local town or city hall before you pick a new mailbox because they may only allow one type. Generally, secure mailboxes come in two broad categories.

Wall-Mounted Secure Mailboxes

Mounted secure mailboxes are generally smaller in size. They mount straight to the side of your garage, home, fence, or gate. They're great for the suburbs or for larger cities where you don't have room for a larger mailbox.

However, if you want to switch from a curbside mailbox to a wall-mounted box, you have to contact your local post office first. They'll tell you if this is feasible and allowed or if you should just replace your current mailbox with a secure one but leave it in the same location.

Curbside Secure Mailbox

A secure curbside mailbox is a larger mailbox that mounts on a post alongside the road in front of your home. They usually have a mail slot or dropbox that isn't locked at the front or top of the box. The postal worker drops the mail into this dropbox, and it falls into a secure area that can only be accessed by a key.

If you have an existing curbside mailbox, it's generally a good idea to simply upgrade it to a secure curbside mailbox. Again, you want to contact your local post office and your local city or town hall before you make any changes, so you're sure that it'll be approved.

Mounting Guidelines for Curbside and Wall-Mounted Mailboxes

Curbside Mailboxes

  • Curbside mailboxes typically have to be put up on the right side of the road facing outward. This can help the mail carrier reach it easily.
  • The identifying house numbers must be clear and easy to read. They have to be at least one inch tall and in front of your mailbox's flag.
  • Your curbside mailbox has to be between six to eight inches from the curb.
  • The door on your mailbox has to be located between 41 and 45 inches off of the ground.
Wall-Mounted Mailboxes

  • There are no specific dimensions from the US Postal Service that your wall-mounted box has to fit. However, local restrictions do apply.
  • Your box has to allow for an unobstructed and safe access.
  • The wall-mounted mailbox's flap has to open and close smoothly.
Important Secure Mailbox Criteria

Once you've decided on a type of mailbox, you can start to compare important features to ensure that your new mailbox meets all of your criteria.

Budget

Your budget will come into play when you're deciding on a new mailbox. There is a huge cost range available with the more basic models starting at around $30. The higher cost secure mailboxes can easily cost around $1,000 per mailbox. It's a good idea to buy one that is at least $100 to $300 just to be on the safe side. It may be worth it to spend a little more upfront than have to replace it if it breaks or if something goes wrong.

Installation Ease

How easy your new secured mailbox is to install is also important. This is especially true if you plan to install it on your own or if it is your first secured mailbox. The directions should be clear and easy to follow. Typically, the more high-quality secure mailboxes are easier to install. You could also pay for a professional installation.

Mounting Options

If you pick a curbside mailbox, how does it mount to the ground? Does the pole sit on top of the ground and you secure it with weight or do you have to bury the pole down in the ground and cement it in? Also, think about how a wall-mounted version mounts to the side of your home. Does it screw in or do you install the hardware and slide or snap it into place?

Newspaper Holder

Newspapers can be bulky. This is especially true if they have to be folded up to fit into your mailbox. Some secure mailboxes come with an additional newspaper compartment that frees up room for your letters, bills, or parcels. It also works for weekly flyers and business adds that can clutter up your mailbox.

Restrictions

Some cities, towns, or counties require you to have a specific type of mailbox that meets certain criteria. The postal service won't deliver your mail if you don't have it. The first call you want to make is to your local post office. They'll be able to tell you what criteria your mailbox has to meet, so you get your mail. This could be things like size requirements, build material, or location.

Safety Considerations

For curbside mailboxes, you don't want to be out in the road when you empty the mailbox. Some curbside boxes come with the option of having a rear entry door. This allows you to get your mail on the opposite side of the mailbox as the road. It reduces the chances of you or someone in your family having an accident.

Security

Is the opening big enough to allow someone to stick their hands in to get at your mail? How does the mailbox lock? Some secure mailboxes require you to punch in a code. Other secure mailboxes have a simple lock and key combination. Consider where you live as well. If you're the only person around for miles, you may need fewer security features to keep your mail safe.

Space Requirements

One of the main considerations you want to keep in mind is how much space you need. Do you normally get a lot of mail or periodic mail? Do you get larger parcels and envelopes or standard business class size? Wall-mounted boxes are going to have more space constraints than curbside ones do. You also want to consider the size of the opening. This will let you be sure that all of your mail can fit through.

Weatherproofing

Your mailbox is exposed to a variety of different elements including rain, winds, sleet, and snow if you're in an area with four seasons. You want your new mailbox to withstand these weather conditions without rusting or corroding. Galvanized steel is a good choice that is resistant to rust along with wear and tear. Make sure you double check any hinges because these tend to be weaker points.
