Shaping one's abdominal muscles is vital towards overall fitness and appearance, but is not always the easiest activity to undertake. Plain sit ups can aggravate back conditions, and there is research out there that sit ups are bad for the spine and possibly injurious. This injury risk can be mitigated through the use of a sit up bench, which provides more support to the lumbar region, while providing for a safer and more comfortable abdominal workout.

Sit up benches range from the simple and cheap, to those that are more intricate with a larger amount of features that can almost replace a gym visit. In general, sit up machines can make an abdominal workout more efficient and standardized, and can reduce the various when one is simply doing sit ups and crunches on the floor. When used correctly, a sit up bench can provide for a total abdominal workout. By varying abdominal exercises, one can gain a very strong core through consistent use of the sit up bench. Additionally, the bench is good for not only sit ups, but other exercise as well, including dumbbell bench presses. The following is a listing of varying features and things to consider when shopping for a sit up bench.


Sit up benches that just allow you to sit ups get the job done if you are looking for just an abdominal workout. However, if you are going to use the space in your living quarters for a bench, you may as well be able to do other exercises with that bench. The design of the bench should enable users to tone other muscle groups beyond just the abdominal muscles. Ideally, the best design will allow buyers to utilize this as a weight bench as well, and not just for inclined abdominal exercises. Being able to adjust the bench to completely flat, and not simply an incline, will open up quite a few additional ways to use the bench. Additional exercises that one should expect a sit up bench to allow are crunches, decline chest presses and trunk extensions.


Different sit up benches have different weight bearing capacity. The lower the weight bearing capacity, the more restricted the uses of the bench. For example, if a bench can allow for only 250 pounds of capacity, the user likely cannot exercise with much weight since it will exceed the capacity of the bench. A low capacity will also restrict other possible uses of the bench. Some benches allow for up to 650 pounds of capacity, which increases the bench's utility and allows for performance of heavy-duty exercises. In addition, benches with low weight capacity do not allow for the attachment of a stability ball or other useful add-ons. However, benches with lower capacity will have other benefits when it comes to portability and ease to store. Simply stated, it is easier to fold and put away a smaller bench than it is a larger bench.


At the risk of sounding obvious, one should look for a bench that can handle the rigors of a vigorous workout. The smaller benches with lower weight capacity may not stand up to the tests of a workout. It may be difficult to get a true sense of the sturdiness of a bench without seeing it in person, but benches that are advertised as being made with heavy-duty steel construction may be sturdier than others.


In today's era of high rents and expensive housing, space is often at a premium in users' residences, as people are "going small" to save on housing costs. That means that users may not have the space that they used to for home gym products. In many cases, users like to have the ability to fold the bench and put it away rather than having it occupy a permanent place in the living room or basement (because they many not even have a living room or basement). Benches that fold flat maximize storage, but the more features a bench has, the harder it will be to store. Often, users are faced with a tradeoff in terms of weight capacity and ability to store. Benches that are foldable are the best for storage, and can easily be placed in a closet or under a bed.


Padding is an important consideration when it comes to comfort and support. Benches that are too hard defeat the purpose of a bench, which is to support the user's back. Benches that are too soft will not provide the support that is necessary. Also, the material of the padding must be comfortable for the user. Models that use vinyl padding provide the most comfort. Also, the thickness of the padding makes a difference in the comfort. Thinly padded benches mean that the user is lying directly on the hard part of the bench, which will leave a user sore and uncomfortable and increase the risk of injury.


Ergonomics account for the comfort and usability of the design. Benches that are narrow are not well-tailored for many people. Wide benches are better for broader shouldered individuals. Also, some benches may not accommodate taller people, leaving parts of a user's body off of the bench when they are trying to exercise. This would defeat the purpose of a sit up bench. Additionally, the knee and ankle roller pads should be well-covered with padding to ensure comfortable use. One key feature to pay attention to is the position of the leg rollers. Some models take that into account because the positioning of the rollers can impact back strain. The XMark and Akonza models are well-designed ergonomically.

Sit up benches range from the super cheap to the more expensive models that begin to rival a home gym. In deciding which model is right for you, one should consider how often you will intend to use this device. If it is a daily part of your workout routine, it may be conducive to spend the extra money, both for the extra features, as well as the durability. In any event, most considerations support the purchase of a more complicated and expensive bench. Sit up benches that have many positions or features, or are ergonomically designed for comfort, tend to cost more. If one is trying to economize, they may end up with an uncomfortable bench of limited use. If you buy a more expensive bench, it could begin to replace the exercise that can be done at the gym, and may result in gym membership savings.
