Ski Boot Bag Buying Guide

Ski Boot Bag Image
Picture: EVERYTHING BOOT BAG/BACKPACK from Athalon

A ski boot bag does far more than carry heavy-duty footwear, but boots do take up more of its space than the other essential items. As a convenient repository for crucial items that skiers need on the slopes, it provides a place for helmet and hat, gloves, goggles and an extra jacket at a minimum. The ample room in a bag can accept a water bottle and snacks that come in handy for staying hydrated and quelling hunger pangs. More than most other sports, skiing and golf require many pieces of equipment in addition to clubs or skis and poles. A ski boot bag serves the same purpose as a golf bag, and no experienced golfer or skier goes anywhere without one. The convenience of finding everything in one place contributes to the enjoyment of the sport and prevents disappointment from forgetting to take an essential item to the course or the slopes. A well-packed ski boot bag can make the difference between a successful outing and a highly unsatisfactory one, making the selection of the right product a productive and rewarding activity.

Deciding to Wear or Carry a Ski Boot Bag

Ski boot bags offer many of the same options as regular luggage with features that let owners wear or pull them. The location of ski slopes usually requires travel by car or plane, and some bags have designs that make them appropriate for each mode. Some skiers regard a ski boot bag as almost as essential as skis, making the selection process highly significant.

· Backpack

For convenience, many skiers choose a ski boot backpack, making it one of the most popular models on the ski accessory market. An advantage that makes it an excellent choice is the freedom that it provides for hands that may need to carry skis and poles. For skiers who put clothing and personal items in a wheeled bag, the backpack frees their hands to manage it as well as airplane tickets, security processing at airports and gratuities for helpers. Qualities that make a pack desirable include a technically well-constructed model of lightweight but durable material, attractive colors and conveniently located pockets and zippers. Skiers who prefer a backpack style of ski boot bag and also travel by air need to consider the size of the overhead storage bins to make sure that it can fit in the available space.

The weight of boots requires extra padding on the backpack to provide a comfortable period of many hours of wear. The water-repellent polyester material in a compartment provides a place for wet boots, a condition that may not occur on the way to the slopes but undoubtedly does happen on the way home. The separate locations protect clothing and food items in the main body of the bag from getting wet or spoiled. Some models provide grommeted drain holes that let water escape as snow and ice from the slopes start to melt inside the bag. Any first consideration must evaluate the space that can accept a helmet, the most substantial piece of equipment other than boots that can go into a backpack. Goggles and water bottles take up space as well, and some skiers like to put clothing in it too. Arrival at a resort after a long trip can produce a tired traveler who may not want to unpack suitcases, and access to a fresh outfit is a welcome find. A zipper that extends around the backpack in a long arch increases the ease of access and makes it unnecessary to unload the contents to find the desired items. Adjustable straps on a bag increase the comfort level and allow it to adapt to bodies of various sizes. Other features that make a backpack desirable include a rip-resistant material that can stand up to the rough treatment that may occur when it gets tossed into a trunk or backseat of a car. A pack needs feet that can protect it from dampness when it rests on the ground.

• Bags with Wheels

High on the list of conveniences, a wheeled bag rolls along smoothly regardless of weight. Easy to load into the trunk of a car and to guide through long distances between airport gates, a wheeled suitcase provides exceptional convenience. For the ultimate in comfort, a heated bag delivers warmth to the boots and gives skiers a lovely start to a downhill run. The options that skiers choose for suitcases with wheels determine the choice to have a hard case or a soft bag. Opinions that skiers express firmly support one or the other, and few have any willingness to use anything but their favorite style. Bags that have wheels provide plenty of space for helmet and goggles, gloves, hat and boots with lots of room left over for clothes. They avoid the space limitations of backpacks and provide ease of access in a less confined area.

Choosing a Hard or Soft Case

Most skiers express a strong preference for a specific type of boot bag, but the considerations for all designs come down to capacity, storage and construction. Comfort creates another factor to think about in backpacks.

• Hard Case

No one can question the ability of a hard case to provide greater protection from the elements than a ski boot bag of soft material. The durability of a solid material makes it a good choice if its ride to the slopes occurs in a rack on top of a car. It can resist the rough handling that it may receive in air travel and protect the contents efficiently. However, its solid shape requires space for travel or storage. While on the road on in the air, skiers may not object to the size of the protective case that delivers the contents undamaged and in excellent condition. The space requirement may create storage problems at home, a consideration that may affect a buying decision. The weight of the hard case material tends to exceed that of soft cases, and a loaded case may weigh more than airlines allow without a penalty. A potential balance to the expense of traveling with a hard case provides access to airline coverage of damage, a consideration that does not occur with soft cases.

• Soft Case

A consideration that may escape notice when purchasing a carrier for ski boots is the size of the boots themselves. Some backpacks cannot accept boots for larger than average feet, and some manufacturers allow boots only up to size 13. Most ski boot bags have a volume of 50 to 70 liters or 13 to 18 gallons. The capacity must allow the contents to accommodate the boots, helmet, goggles, gloves and a hat at a minimum. It must provide a place for valuables and clothing as well. Experienced skiers know that a boot bag needs many compartments, and those that have only three or four do not provide adequate capacity for separating items. A careful evaluation of the contents that may need to go into a bag can help direct a purchasing decision.

Storage considerations can contribute significantly to a decision to buy a bag or reject it. A hard case may seem attractive for a trip to the slopes that may last a week or less, but it requires storage until another opportunity arises. The malleable shape of a soft bag allows it to fit in a crowded closet or perhaps under a bed. No one wants to rue a decision to purchase an item that creates an eyesore because it has no place to hide. The construction of a ski boot bag can determine its usability as well as its durability. Most manufacturers use a lightweight polyester fabric, and some line it with a sturdy canvas material to increase longevity. Drainage grommets and water-resistant fabrics can make sure that the interior compartments remain dry.
