Slide Viewer Buying Guide

Slide Viewer Image
Picture: Medalight 35mm Desk Top Portable from The Imaging World

You found a box of slides in your grandmother’s attic, or you’re walking down memory lane with your parents. You can view slides on a projector, but what if you just want to look through a few? Whether you choose a small, handheld viewer or you invest in a larger overhead style, your slides deserve to be seen. Here’s our best advice for choosing your slide viewer.

How Do I Choose A Slide Viewer?

The basic idea is the same across all slide viewers: magnification and illumination. However, there are a few different options you should consider

Magnifier Versus LCD

Basic magnifier lenses enhance the slide two or three times (possibly more) using a magnifying lens that operates similarly to a pair of glasses. The slide fits behind and appears in the viewfinder under the glass, magnified to show detail and make viewing more comfortable. There’s nothing to break down, and as long as you keep the lens clean and guard against falls, it should last a long time.

Newer technology uses a digital display to produce a clear reproduction of the slide. There’s no distortion towards the sides the way you sometimes find with traditional magnifiers, but they can be prohibitively expensive for many people. Also, LCD can eventually go out if the parts aren’t quality or you don’t take care of it.

Lighting

You can’t see the slide without lighting in traditional magnifying viewers. The best slide viewers have even lighting that’s bright enough to see detail in the slide clearly. However, the light shouldn’t be so bright that it distorts the picture or the colors. Even, bright light is best. If it mimics natural light, it’s even better.

Handheld Or Projector

A handheld slide viewer usually holds just one slide at a time and is meant for personal viewing. These are great to have on hand when you want the freedom to check out your slides easily and wherever you want.

Handheld viewers are smaller, square devices with the magnifying glass or LCD in front and a place for the slide in the back. The light illuminates the slide and voila! You can see all your memories.

They’re so convenient. If you tend to view pictures a few at a time or as you think about it, keeping a handheld viewer around may be what you need.

A projector style, or overhead viewer, goes further by throwing the image out onto a larger screen. Smaller projectors hold one or a few slides, and larger ones have a more significant capacity. Projectors aren’t quite as convenient because of their size, but many of them are plenty manageable for occasional use, especially if you tend to view slides with friends and family.

Slide Size

Most slides are 35mm positive film set against a cardboard frame. Most standard viewers are set up to fit this type of slide. If you have a non-standard slide size such as 2 inches or 1/8 inch, make sure your viewer is compatible because those aren’t as common. If you aren’t sure what size slide you have, you can check a website or head to your local photo shop where they can tell you.

Power

Most handheld viewers are battery operated with easily replaceable batteries. Remove the cover and snap them in. If you decide on an overhead viewer, some have dedicated power supplies for a standard outlet.

Unless you spend hours viewing your slides at a time, you should get quite a long life from your battery, since the magnifiers have just a single bulb providing light. LCD displays may use more battery life.

Features

Most handheld viewers will come with everything you need to get started viewing. They don’t require an outside lightbox because the bulb is attached, and they don’t need a lot of bells and whistles.

As long as the magnifying lens doesn’t distort the edges too much, your basic viewer should be enough to view your slide collection.

Price

Price is subjective but typically spending a little bit more will get you a higher quality handheld or overhead viewer, so you don’t have to replace it after a bit of wear and tear. That said, the price isn’t the only indicator of quality.

Magnification viewers are the most economical of the bunch with overhead and LCD viewers following behind. If you just want to explore grandma’s box from the attic, a simple handheld viewer is all you need.

Performance

If you can, test out a few in person before making a decision. That will help you know if the viewing screen is comfortable for you and if there’s enough magnification. Don’t assume that more magnification is what you need. You may be okay with just two or three times magnification. You’ll have an ultra-portable viewer that’s easier to store and more comfortable to view.

If you can get a demonstration of the brightness and clarity of an overhead viewer, that’s a wise choice. You don’t want to invest in an overhead viewer only to find that it’s difficult to see or the clarity isn’t what you’d like.

The Takeaway

Slides may not be as common anymore, but there are too many memories wrapped up in those old family slides for them to just sit in a box forever. A simple handheld viewer can help you relive memories and make sure that your slides remain family heirlooms as long as they’re in your possession.

As long as the light is bright enough and there’s no distortion in the magnification, a handheld slide viewer is a convenient option for your slides. If you need more viewing space, upgrading to an overhead may also be the right choice. Whichever you choose, get the slides out of the drawer and start viewing.
