Soldering Station Buying Guide

Soldering Station Image
Picture: Model #3020-XTS Digital from X-TRONIC

Soldering is the method of joining tow or multiple metals together by melting them down. After the metal are melted a fusible metal alloy filler known by the name of solder is used to create a strong and permanent bond between the previously melted metals. This solder which usually has a lower melting point than the other metals, helps solidify the melted metal together and form a strong bond I formed. Many people confuse the term soldering with welding but the two processes are very different in general. Soldering is primarily used in several electrical and plumbing processed. In the earlier days, the process of soldering was used to make jewelleries and utensils and other tools, however nowadays it is used in a variety of electronic mechanisms for connecting wires, electrical components and also to build up printed circuit boards PCBs. There are basically three form of soldering that can be done. These are:

  1. Soft soldering. This method of soldering uses a tin-lead alloy for the filler material as solder.
  2. Silver soldering, which uses silver as the solder alloy. This is a stronger method of soldering than soft soldering.
  3. Brazing typically uses brass for the solder alloy.

Products those are generally required for soldering.

For the intricate process of soldering a good quality soldering station is required. But what actually is this station? A certain amount heat I required to melt each metal down in the process of soldering. As each metal has a different melting point it is vital that the temperature is controlled invariably. This job is done with the soldering station. The soldering station contains of an electrical power supply, a control circuit which aids to control and maintain certain temperatures, a display. It also contains the most important part that I the soldering iron. The soldering iron which I also called the soldering head is a low powered iron that is used for joining the metals together by melting them. A power specific watt is used in the soldering iron for producing the heat that is required to solder the metals together. Some of these irons are temperature controlled and a higher power is available for joints that require a greater heat capacity to be joined together. A various range of such soldering irons are available in the marketplace with a variety of specifications. Starting from cordless ones to the ones with temperature controlling features build up within. Anyone can find the most convenient form of soldering irons in the market place that suit their specific requirements. Some of the following types of soldering irons are readily available in the marketplace these days.

  1. Simple Iron: These are the simplest form of head available for soldering. It has a low power iron with a power supply in 15 – 35 watts.
  2. Cordless Iron: There I a source of power included in this particular type of soldering iron. It contains a small iron that is heated up by a battery or gas combustion using butane or similar gases in a tiny contained chamber. In many situations electricity might not be available to power the soldering station or the soldering iron. This sort of cordless irons what have a separate source of power supply built within can be very useful in those cases. Here the gas iron changes the supply of power accordingly by adjusting the gas flow. They also have interchangeable tips with a variety of sizes and also come with a blow torch, hot air blower and a hot knife for plastic cutting.
  3. Temperature-Controlled Soldering Head: This type of irons temperature is controlled by thermal equilibriums. Here the cooling and power input is somewhat controlled by the environment and the materials that the items comes to touch. Chassis, a certain mass of metal is used for the purpose of dropping down the temperature. Chassis is a small piece of iron that typically loses a significant amount of temperature in order to solder a joint. Some irons also come with a temperature sensor to maintain the temperature of the tip uniformly. Power can be changer=d accordingly with the amount needed for the soldering process. Many tips are also available that have magnetized irons which loose its magnetism when reached a certain temperature level.

Hot Knife

Other than a quality soldering iron, a hot knife is also included in soldering station products. A hot knife is also a type of soldering iron but consists of a double edged blade. These blades are placed on a heating element and when heated it can be used to cut fabrics and many other materials like foam. These are mainly used in automotive, carpeting, marine and many other industrial uses.

Soldering Stands

A soldering stand is used to keep the soldering iron away from other inflammable materials. The stand comes with a type of cellulose sponge and also a flux pot for being able to clean the soldering tip.

All forms of soldering station products ranging from iron tips to hot knifes and stands are readily available in the marketplace these days and can be found in many stores which supply electronic materials. Many modernized soldering equipment are getting out in the marketplace with multiple features and functions of temperature control. Many special cleaners are also available for cleaning the soldering station as the tip may readily get oxidised. A small sponge is always available with the soldering station for cleaning purposes.

Pros of soldering station products

There are some certain pros and cons of soldering station equipment. One very important advantage of it is that most of the soldering products come with an adjustable temperature feature which is great for being able to properly maintain the required heat for melting the metals together. They heat up very fast once connected with the power supply and can be left on for a long time as long as it is needed for the work to get done.

Cons of soldering station products

Big things often are difficult to be soldered with the fine soldering iron tip and can take up a long time to do so. It is a bit hard to find some specific iron tips of such larger sizes and as a result multiple soldering heads needs to be purchased for getting a variety of jobs completed.
