Stocked Trauma Bag Buying Guide

Stocked Trauma Bag Image
Picture: st Responder Trauma from Dealmed

Imagine this: you're driving down the highway and you come up on a pretty bad accident. You can see that people need help, but you don't have anything to help them. You could stop and call 911, but other than that, there's nothing you can do. Now imagine the same scenario, but you have a fully stocked trauma bag. Think about how different the situation could've been. You never know what's going to happen, so it's better to be prepared and not need the bag, than need the bag and not have it. There are many options out there for stocked trauma bags, so we've written a buying guide to help you find the best one!

Variety of Products

The first thing you want look at is the variety of products in the bag. You want to make sure that there are plenty of different tools included. The reason this is so important is because you never know what kind of injury you're going to come across. Some more serious injuries need different items than an injury that's just a little cut.

Keep in mind, if someone is seriously injured, you don't want to move them too much because you never know what kind of internal injuries they have. Just do what you can without having them do too much movement. With that being said, here are a few of the tools you should look for

  • CPR Mask
  • Trauma Sheers
  • Eye Pad
  • Burn Dressing
  • Emergency Blanket
  • BP Cuff
  • Iodine Wipes

These are just a few of the things and many stocked trauma bags come with other items that are not only useful, but sometimes required.

Basic Supplies

In addition to these more complex tools, you also want to make sure your kit has the basics. You don't want to get a kit that only has the complex items because you'll probably come across more simple injuries than complex ones. The good news is that even the smallest stocked trauma bags usually have the basic tools. Some of the basic tools you want to make sure you have are listed below

  • Band Aids
  • Gauze Pads
  • Alcohol Pads
  • Ace Bandages
  • Anti Bacterial Ointment
  • Cold Packs
  • Splints for fingers and limbs

These are just some of the basic things and you'll want to make sure you have plenty of them.

High-Quality Supplies

This next point is extremely important. You want to ensure that the tools and items included in the trauma bag are high quality. The last thing you want is low quality items that hinder more than they help. For instance, you don't want band aids that don't stick or emergency blankets with holes.

There are a few things you can do to make sure the items are high quality. For starters, you can read reviews of the trauma bag before you buy it. Often times, customers will put issues they've come across in the reviews. If a certain trauma bag has quite a few issues, you'll want to look at another options. Another thing you can do is look at the manufacturer of the items. You'll then be able to look them up and see reviews about them. If they've been known for low quality products, then you'll want to stay away. Finally, you can try to look at the items in person before buying. This will give you first hand knowledge of how the products are made.

Thorough Guide

You'll want to make sure that the stocked trauma bag you buy has a thorough guide. While most people who buy these bags know what to do with the items, some people might not be sure. You want to make sure that the guide easily explains how you use everything, especially the items that most people don't come across. While this isn't a make or break decision for some people, it could be for others.

The biggest reason why this is so important is because you don't want to come up on a scene and try to use tools that you have no idea about. This can actually end up hurting the person even more. If something happens as a result of you trying to use a tool you're inexperienced with, there's a chance you could have legal action brought against you. That's the last thing you want, so you want to make sure you read this guide and, if possible, try to get some hands on experience in a situation that isn't life threatening.

Organization and Compartments

Another thing you want to look for is that the trauma bag is organized and has several compartments. You want to be able to get what you need when you need it. When an emergency comes up, seconds can be the difference between literal life or death. You don't want to have to search for what you need. You should be able to just open up your bag and pull out exactly what you're looking for.

A lot of times, these trauma bags will already come organized. The issue is you might not know where everything is. It would be a good idea to take everything out and organize it how you want to. This will also help you remember where stuff is. For instance, you might put all bandages in a front zipper pocket, while the bigger stuff will go in the inside compartment. If you need to, put everything in and write it down on a piece of paper. You'll be able to study this paper so you remember exactly where everything is.

Size

In terms of size, there are 2 things you're looking at. The first one is how big the bag is. You want it big enough that it can fit everything, but not so big that you can't store it easily. You don't want to have to put it somewhere that isn't easily accessible because you won't be able to get the bag when you need it. The other thing you're looking for is how many people you can help with the bag. Most of the time, stocked trauma bags will have enough items to help a certain number of people. For instance, a smaller bag might only have enough supplies to help 5 people, while a large bag might be able to help 100 people. The best thing to do is think about how often you want to restock and how many people you'll think you'll be helping. Most people go for the larger bag just because they never know what will happen or when they'll need it.

Weight

Finally, you want to look at the weight of the bag. While a bunch of supplies are obviously going to have a higher weight than a smaller bag, you want to make sure it isn't too heavy. The first reason is because you don't want to have trouble getting the bag where it needs to be. If the bag is very heavy, you're going to be tired before you even get to the person that needs help. If it's too heavy, you might not even be able to pick it up.

Before you buy the kit, there should be something in the description that tells you how much it weighs. If you see that it's a higher weight and you don't think you'll be able to pick it up, you'll want to try to find another option that isn't as heavy. With that being said, most bags don't weigh too much so you shouldn't have too many problems.

Now that you know what to look for, you'll be able to be ready and stocked at any given time. You'll be able to help when needed and you'll have a peace of mind knowing you have a fully stocked trauma bag at any given time! Do your research and find the best one for your needs.
