Purchasing a quality stockpot is a smart move for any kitchen because they're very versatile. It's great for stock reductions and making stock. However, it's also a great tool to make braised meats, pasta, sauces, soups, and much more.

The goal is to buy a stockpot that will last for years. You also want it to work very well for every type of cooking that you do. We're going to outline what sets a stockpot apart from traditional pots. We'll also cover important buying points to keep in mind to help ensure that you get a good stockpot.

Stockpot Buying Guide

The first thing you want to know is what is classified as a stockpot since there are dozens of different types of pots available. Knowing this will help you pick out a stockpot from a traditional pot.

Defining a Stockpot

Stockpots traditionally range from 6 to 12 quarts in size. They come with very straight and deep sides with a slightly rounded base. This design makes it easier to stir your stock. It also helps with moisture retention. You can find traditional tall and more narrow stockpots. They also come in slightly shorter and wider designs. However, the very straight walls are the same on both designs. You're looking for a design similar to a soup pot.

What Sets a Stockpot Apart?

Your stockpot's size and design are the two main things that set it apart from other cookware. They come in several sizes that range from smaller 6-quart designs up to over 200-quart designs. Also, these pots tend to have very straight sides. This makes stirring your stock easier. It also makes it more difficult for food to get stuck in small nooks and crannies. Finally, a stockpot is set apart by the bottom of the pot. They generally have very thick bottoms because this helps to prevent your stock from scorching as it cooks on your stove for hours at a time.

Selecting the Best Size Stockpot

Since stockpots come in so many different sizes, deciding on a size is one of your first steps. You most like won't need a huge stockpot as they use in commercial kitchens. You can get a good rough size estimate by thinking about how much soup or stock you typically make at one time and doubling the amount. Your stockpot's conductivity means how well it transmits heat from the original source to the items in the stockpot. If it has good conductivity, your items will heat quickly and evenly. You don't want the condensation to slip out of the side of the pot and make a mess on your stove. Also, it's important to make sure that it has a good handle, so it's easy to lift and put on.

As we mentioned briefly, most stockpots for domestic kitchens range from 6 to 12 quarts. They do go up to as large as 20 quarts before crossing over into commercial size territory. They have to be larger than your traditional pots because when you make soup or stock, you typically make large batches. Having a larger pot stops you from using two pots to accommodate your larger batch of soup or stock.


A good stockpot can be a more expensive cookware purchase. This is why you want to ensure that your stockpot comes with some type of warranty against damage. A lot of companies back their stockpots by a lifetime guarantee. This lifetime guarantee allows you to quickly and easily return your stockpot if a part of it breaks or wears down when you use it. Not all companies offer this, however. It's important that you pay attention to the warranty when you buy it.


Your stockpot is going to be larger and heavier than most of your other cookware. You want to note how heavy the pot is on its own though because it's only going to get heavier when you add your soup or stock to it. The last thing you want to do is have to ladle your stock out of the pot because it's too heavy for you to lift on your own.
