Survival Foods Buying Guide

If you want to protect yourself and your family when disaster strikes, having a plan in place is vital. You will also need to have enough food to last until help arrives so that nothing bad will happen to you. Whether you face floods, forest fires, severe weather or other threats, you never know when the unthinkable will happen.

These disasters can cut you off from civilization before you spot the red flags, and being prepared could be the difference between life and death. This guide will get you moving in the right direction and show you everything you need to create a supply of survival foods that will prevent you from going hungry. Your needs, goals and budget will play a role in the path you select.

Setting a Goal

Some people buy survival food but never create a plan, and they won't get the best results when they make that mistake. They either don’t get enough food or buy too much and waste their money. Rather than taking blind action, have a strategy near the top of your mind if you want to get the most from your investment.

Research to discover the most likely disasters that can take place in your area to get a clear picture of where you should begin. You should aim to store at least a three-day supply of food and water for everyone who lives in your home. If you have enough funds and storage space to do it, getting a one-year supply of food and drinkable water keeps you out of harm's way.

Planning Your Budget

Review your budget and monthly spending habits to get an idea of how much survival food you can buy at a time. Even if you don't have a lot of extra money, making a few changes to your budget can do wonders to make room for survival food. Some people opt to buy a few items each week until they have enough to reach their goals, and you can do the same if you don't want to spend a lot of money right away. On the other hand, you might want to get your survival food shopping done so that you won't need to worry about it. If that is the case, taking out a small loan or using a credit card can help.

Finding Storage Space

Buying a bunch of survival food without having a place to store it is not a smart move. Ideally, you will have space in your home or basement for your survival food, but not everyone is that lucky. Organizing the items in your pantry or clearing out a closet is a nice way to free up the room you need to move forward with your plan. If you are still unable to get enough room for your survival food, consider renting a storage unit near your home. Getting a storage unit, however, should be a last resort because you want your survival food to be on your property.

Buying Survival Food Kits

If you have never bought survival food in the past and don't know what you should do first, opting for a survival food kit is a good place from which to start. You can find kits with enough food for three, 10, 30 and 90 days when you look online or at a local store. You can even find one-year packages that ensure you will have enough meals to last until the rescue team finds you and your family. Looking at the details of any kit you are considering is wise because you need to know what type of food you will get and how long it will last.

Bottled Water

While most people can survive for up to three weeks without food, you can only live for three to four days if you don't have clean water to drink. Plan to store at least 1 gallon of water per day for each person in your home if you don't want to risk dehydration. Also, don't buy water bottles without looking at the label unless you want to face unneeded problems when the unthinkable occurs.

Knowing the expiration date of your water is essential to your health and well-being. You can save a little money if you buy water bottles in bulk online or at a warehouse outlet in your area.

Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is an excellent addition to any survival kit when your mission is to get the most for each dollar you spend. You can add peanut butter to many other foods to enhance the flavor, or you can enjoy it on its own with a spoon. Once you open the jar to consume some of it, peanut butter will go stale in about three or four months, but it will last for up to a year in a sealed container. Although it won't taste pleasant after it expires, stale peanut butter won't cause much harm if you eat it, making it a viable option when you have no other choice.

Canned Food

Canned foods have a tight seal and can last for up to five years after you buy them, making them an attractive choice for survival situations. You can find canned fruits, vegetables, meat and other options that will keep you full and healthy during a disaster. You will need a can opener if you opt for standard cans of food from the store, but you can buy canned foods with easy-open tabs if you would like to make your life a little easier.

Take a look at cereal if you need even more survival foods to consider while you plan your next move. The best part is that you can find many types of cereals in a range of great tasting flavors. Make sure you look at the nutrition list on the side of the box, but most cereals come with tons of healthy ingredients that will keep you at your best for as long as possible. Keep your survival cereal separated from your daily food so that you don't accidentally open the box, and it will stay good for nearly a year without spoiling.

Dehydrated Fruits and Vegetables

Overlooking the value of dehydrated fruits and vegetables is a mistake you need to avoid if you want to discover what foods make sense for a survival situation. Dehydrated fruits and vegetables are much lighter than canned foods and last just as long. In fact, dehydrated vegetables can last for up to 10 years if the manufacturer prepares them properly. Stock your shelves with these dehydrated foods to get a variety of options and to keep hunger at bay for as long as possible.

Final Thoughts

Even though nobody wants to think about it, a disaster can strike at the worst possible time without much warning, and the things you do now will determine your odds of survival. Having enough food and water to stay alive until things return to normal is essential because you don't want the unthinkable to catch you off guard. Reviewing your budget and considering your goals gets the ball moving along the correct path, but you can't forget to create storage space for your survival foods.

Even if a flood or another natural disaster strikes and disrupts your daily life, you will have confidence because of the plan you crafted, and your family will thank you. Review this guide again if required so that you can buy foods that make sense for you and your family. No matter your needs or budget, you can prepare for the worst when you have a solid plan in place, and the outcome will put a smile on your face.
