Sustain Pedal Buying Guide

Sustain pedals are used by musicians who play keyboards or digital pianos. They mimic the action and function of the traditional sustain pedal, which is built into the acoustic piano. There have always been different types of sustain pedals, and this was true even when they were only located on the traditional piano. Additionally, the quality of the sustain pedal would be different depending on the type of piano as well as the price range. Grand piano sustain pedals have better action and performance than the sustain pedals found on the upright piano, for example.

Key Features of Sustain Pedals

Most sustain pedals are designed to provide basic control over the volume and decay of the sounds you produce from your keyboard or digital piano. However, you should be aware that the option of having three pedals in one unit is a key differentiating feature that will determine the type of controls that you will have over the sound.

Key features include the following:

• Compatibility with keyboards and digital pianos: Some pedals have a universal compatibility feature, which assures customers that the pedal controller will work with any model. However, some pedals will only work with specific keyboard brands. Always check the compatibility of the sustain pedal to ensure that it will work with your keyboard or digital piano.

• Responsiveness of the pedal when pressure is applied: Half-pedal techniques are common in some types of piano or keyboard music, but not all sustain pedals are capable of delivering this type of high-quality action.

• Base grip for traction: This is a very important feature for any keyboard player, but it is absolutely critical to have a great grip on the floor for professional musicians who are playing at live events.

• Quality of the attaching cable: Sound is transmitted through cables, and so are other types of signals. The responsiveness of the sound to the pressure applied to the sustain pedal will be partially determined by the quality of the attaching cable.

• Number of pedals: Some sustain pedals come in a single unit with one pedal, but there are optional pedals as well. These are the designs that have the sustain, dampening and volume control pedals all within a single unit.

• Material used on the pedal: Chrome-plated pedals provide an experience that simulates the classic acoustic pedal found on many pianos. The plastic shell casing is both protective and functional.

Pros and Cons

Each feature listed above can be evaluated in terms of the advantages and disadvantages of the particular feature when applied to a specific situation. Different people will have different opinions of whether that particular item would be good or bad for their needs. Professional musicians will often have a more rigorous standard than amateurs when shopping for equipment, for example. There are also different requirements for studio work compared to live performances, and musicians often have different ideas about what types of features are invaluable and which ones are optional.

When evaluating the pros and cons of each pedal feature, keep the following guidelines in mind:

• Price: Cheap pedals can appear attractive, but they will often disappoint when it comes to performance. You can save money, but you will pay in the quality of the control over the sound you produce.

• Quality: The quality of sustain and decay in the sound is often related to the quality of the pedal, and this often means a higher price tag. If you prioritize the sound quality, you might see the lower price tag as a potential disadvantage.

• Number of pedals: For studio musicians who play digital pianos and don’t require lightweight equipment that can be easily transported, the three-in-one sustain pedal is better than the single sustain pedal. However, the reverse might be true for performers who require a keyboard that is as light as possible.

• Length of the cable is an important feature. However, many sustain pedals can use a replacement cable if you want to upgrade the quality of the connections at a later time. Some cables are as long as six feet, but others are between three to five feet long.

• Floor grips generally have a single standard. No matter what type of musician you are, the need to maintain a firm grip on the pedal is universal. Any lapse in the quality in this area is definitely a drawback.

• Connecting jacks: The most common connector is the 1/4 inch jack, but there are some cheap sustain pedals that will have a 1/8 inch jack. If you require an XLR connecting cable, you will need a special type of pedal designed for this input type.

• Warranties: Always keep in mind that each pedal will offer a different type of warranty to cover damage, but these warranties can exclude certain items like drops, spills, cracks and other mishaps. Make sure you understand the terms of the warranty including the period of time that it covers the item.

Examples of Sustain Pedals

1. The triple pedal in one sustain pedal provides musicians with an experience of control over the sounds, and it resembles the action and response of a real piano. It features sustain controls in the right pedal, but it also provides the player with two additional pedals that control the soft and the sostenuto. Keep in mind that there are different qualities for this type of pedal, and some units will perform better than others. High-quality triple pedals are more attractive to professional musicians who don’t mind paying a little more money for the additional control.
2. Universal sustain pedals that feature the action that is experienced in a classical piano will grab the interest of musicians who want this type of responsiveness for their keyboard or digital piano. The realistic feel of the pedal provides superior control over the sound, and this allows you to play more styles of music. This type of pedal might be useful for musicians who want either a single pedal or a three-in-one type of unit.

3. The compact sustain pedal for keyboards is cheaper than the triple pedal or the individual sustain pedal. This unit is a single square instead of a pedal design.

Types of Sustain Pedal Buyers

High-end sustain pedals are necessary for professional musicians who require rapid response, a high level of control, signal quality and sturdy design. There is no precise measurement that can be used to evaluate the needs of an individual musician. However, the type of style that is being played can often determine the quality needs of the player. The quality of the sustain pedal will usually correlate the quality of the digital piano or keyboard, for example. Roland products tend to be more expensive than Kraft pianos, for example, but there are almost always exceptions to any rule in music.

To illustrate this concept, review this list of typical types of sustain pedals and the types of players who will generally prefer each type of product:

• Universal sustain pedal with piano action for keyboard players: This is a mid-range single sustain pedal that is universally compatible with any type of instrument. This makes it a great pedal for general use. It has a cable that is just above five feet long with a 1/4 inch connecting input jack.

• The triple pedal allows classical and advanced players to experience the type of control that is expected from a grand piano.

• The basic square keyboard sustain pedal is a cheaper option for beginning keyboard players who require a basic setup. However, this type of pedal is not always universally compatible, so you will have to purchase a model that fits your particular keyboard.

• Certain sustain pedals will provide users with specific features that are not generally necessary. These players will be attracted to units that have reverse polarity, MIDI compatibility, six-foot connecting cables with a 1/4 inch jack or keyboard-specific capabilities.

Know Your Needs

As a musician, there are many options available to you, but only you can determine the type of situation that you will be encountering. Use this buying guide as a checklist of important items that can allow you to determine what type of sustain pedal is appropriate for your unique needs.
