Swim Training Fin Buying Guide

Swimming is an excellent full-body workout. You use your arms, core, back and leg muscles when you’re moving through the water. Many swimmers can improve their efficiency by focusing on propelling themselves with their legs, which contain some of the largest muscles in the body.

Wearing swim training fins can make you move at what feels like lightning speed. Although the rush that comes from propelling yourself through the water is reason enough to use swim training fins, the fins can also help you improve your stroke.

When you’re shopping for swim training fins, it’s important to know what to look for so that you can choose the best ones for you.

Why Use Swim Training Fins?

Many competitive swimmers use fins for a boost from time to time.Research shows that swim fins can reduce the amount of energy that you expend by 40 percent. Swim fins also allow you to kick less frequently, letting you focus on your stroke.

Surprisingly, swim training fins can reduce the load on your shoulders. Your upper body has to work less strenuously when you’re wearing fins. You’ll achieve the same distance, and you’ll be able to concentrate on your technique. Swim training fins are ideal to use for warmups or when your upper body is injured or sore.

They can also increase the strength in your legs. Although you’ll swim faster when you wear fins, you’ll also experience more resistance. This can help build your leg muscles and endurance. When you wear swim training fins regularly, your kick will improve even after you take them off.

Ankle flexibility is vital for swimmers. If your ankles can’t bend beyond a straight line, you’ll create drag. Without a wide range of motion in your ankles, you’ll push water down instead of backward. When you wear fins, you force your feet into an extended position, helping you develop strong, limber ankles.

What To Look For When Buying Swim Training Fins

You might be tempted to pick up the biggest swim fins to help you with your training. However, bigger fins aren’t necessarily better. You should take the length, style, stiffness and material into account.

Length

Longer fins provide greater resistance against the water than shorter fins. The longer the fin is, the harder your legs will work. Your kick frequency will be slow and unnatural, though.

If you’re a competitive swimmer, you might try using long fins from time to time to improve ankle flexibility or enhancing your leg endurance. Otherwise, long fins are best suited for recreational swimmers, snorkelers and divers, who might want something that makes it easier to propel themselves forward without worrying about form.

Fins with a mid-sized blade balance resistance with speed. Your kick won’t be as fast as it would with a shorter fin, but you can travel farther distances because you won’t get tired out as easily.

Short-bladed fins, such as Zoomers, are helpful for sprinters. They can be used for freestyle or backstroke, and they help swimmers kick at the proper tempo. They don’t drastically alter your natural kick. In fact, your legs should be able to keep up with the rate of your arm strokes.

Material And Rigidity

Stiff fin blades provide strong resistance. They might cause you to kick ineffectively, although they will build leg strength. A softer blade will help you move your legs naturally when you’re racing. Most swimmers find that they transition well between swimming with and without fins when they use those with a flexible blade.

While rubber used to be a popular choice for swim fin construction, silicone is used frequently now. Silicone is flexible and less likely to cause blisters. It shapes itself to your foot over time, making it an extremely comfortable option.

Some swim training fins are constructed with foam. These are more buoyant than other types and can help keep the hips in line with the upper body.

Zoomers are made of rubber and are known for their extreme rigidity. Arena Powerfins are made of silicone and are more flexible.

Speedo Nemesis swim fins contain injection molded EVA foam, and Aqua Sphere AlphaFins are made completely from EVA foam. These float, which makes them convenient if you lose a fin while swimming. Foam fins are also extremely light in weight, which makes them ideal for travel.

Heel Style

Most of the swim fins designed for competitive racers have a closed heel. That means that your foot fits into an enclosed pocket. Some have an open heel, which provide a strap that encloses your foot after you’ve inserted your toe into the fin.

Closed-heel fins must fit properly. If they don’t, you may get painful blisters. A stiff fin with a closed-heel design can dig into your Achilles tendon when you point your toes. Some swimmers say that they get a more secure fit with this style.

Open-heel fins have adjustable straps. These may be more accommodating than closed-heel fins. They might also allow you to maintain a comfortable range of motion. Some swimmers prefer this type of heel style because they get fewer blisters, but others say that they don’t feel as secure as closed-heel fins.

Toe Style

Fins can feature open or closed toes. An open-toe design prevents your toes from getting jammed against the front of the fin while helping you maintain a snug fit. This design can prevent blisters and chafing.

Other Factors To Consider When Buying Swim Training Fins

Many swim fins feel too tight the first time you wear them. Putting them on in the pool will help them slide more easily.

Almost every swim fin is shaped differently. Some have rails along the sides. These help transfer some power to the outer thighs and hips, helping to target these areas during training.

The Speedo Nemesis swim fins have a unique construction, with flow channels on the top and bottom to guide the water properly so that the foot remains aligned. These swim training fins also have scalloped edges that produce extra resistance to improve propulsion.

You can find some swim fins with dedicated left and right sides. These provide arch support in the right place, which can be helpful if your fins make your feet ache.

When it comes down to it, the best swim training fin for you is the one that helps you develop your stroke without restricting your movement. You might need to try a few models to find the best one for you. Owning a few types of swim fins can help you refine different techniques. Ultimately, however, you should get plenty of practice with the swim fins off so that you don’t rely on them completely.
