T5 Grow Light Buying Guide

Indoor growing enthusiasts have a wide range of choices to light their grow rooms. T5, HID, and LED bulbs are all good choices, but each has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Whether you want a jump start on spring seedlings or want year-round growing capability, it’s time to demystify the acronyms and help you find the best grow lights.

What does the “T” in T5 mean?

The 'T' tells you the bulb you’re buying is tube-shaped – T for tube. The number it’s paired with refers to the diameter of the tube in ⅛ inch increments. The diameter of a T5 bulb, its width from side to side, s 5/8th of an inch. The larger the number, the wider the bulb is.

How T5 Lights Work

T5 bulbs are filled with inert gas and a special form of liquid mercury. When electric current passes through the gas, it turns the mercury to vapor, exciting the mercury atoms and resulting in a burst of energy. As the atoms relax, they release invisible ultraviolet light which can only be seen after passing through the phosphorous coating on the inside of the fluorescent tube. Unlike LED or incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lights need a fixture with a ballast to regulate the flow of electrical current. When a T5 grow light is turned on, current flows through the two pins mounted on the end of the bulb, creating an arc between the two electrodes inside. The ballast then reduces the voltage and regulates the flow of power to produce steady light output. Without the ballast, uncontrolled current would burn a fluorescent light out in seconds.

Is the mercury in T5 bulbs safe?

Fluorescent light bulbs do contain some mercury, a neurotoxin with adverse health effects; however, no mercury is released when the bulbs are in use.

The liquid mercury in T5 bulbs has been bound to other elements to make amalgam mercury that doesn’t easily vaporize if a bulb is broken. T5 bulbs should never be put in the trash. Disposal facilities remove the mercury, keeping it out of the waste steam.

What are T5 HO lights?

The “HO” means high output. T5 HO bulbs are the same size as standard T5 lamps, but give off more light. They also use more power, but it’s proportional to the light output, meaning that if you have a small space, using fewer HO bulbs to light your plants is as economical as using a greater number of standard.

Bulb Color

The color of light significantly affects plant growth — not only the visible light, but the UV and infra-red parts of the light spectrum that are not visible to the human eye. Full-spectrum light bulbs provide a balanced light that mimics the sun’s rays, but plants are partial to certain light colors during different growth stages. By manipulating the color of light your plants get at certain times, you can improve the way they grow.

T5 bulbs emit light in a range of colors depending on which you choose, but you won't see a substantial color change. For some plants, for example, blue light encourages foliage growth, while red light encourages flowering.

The key to success is to determine what your plants like and buying bulbs accordingly. If you’re not sure, Mother Nature can’t be wrong — start with full-spectrum lights.

Benefits of T5 Grow Lights

It’s not the latest technology, but T5 grow lights have several advantages over their competitors:

• They produce less light than LED or HID bulbs and have a shorter life span, but they’re a fraction of the cost to buy and run. • They produce little heat which, minimizing the ventilation needed in a small growing space. • They’re less intense and can be installed closer to your plants without scorching them. • They’re energy efficient, reducing power costs. • Replacement bulbs are easy to find at any home or hardware store.

Fixture options are very similar, but their overall design and features will determine which works best in your space. These are the important things to look for.

Fixture/Bulb Size

T5 grow light come in an extensive array of sizes, but the most common for household use are 1-, 2-, and 4-foot lengths. Since, T5 bulbs produce significantly less light than LEDs or HIDs, they need to be placed closer to plants to be effective.

Small fixtures may hold as few as a bulb or two, while larger models can accommodate 12 or more. The more bulbs they hold, the wider they are. When choosing a size, consider how many plants you want to treat and ensure the square footage of your fixture is roughly the same or only slightly smaller. Plants should be no further away than two feet from the margin of the fixture.

Wattage and Lumens

Wattage is the amount of energy a light bulb uses. The lower the watts, the less energy it uses and the lower your power bill will be. Wattage and the amount of light a bulb produces are not proportional between different types of bulbs, only between T5 sizes.

The amount of light emitted from a light bulb is measured in lumens. More lumens equal brighter light, fewer lumens equals dimmer light. Standard T5 bulbs are available in 14, 21, 28, and 35 watts and produce about 110 lumens per watt. High-output bulbs come in 24, 39, 54, and 80 watt sizes and generate more light per watt.

Both watts and lumens offer a general way of figuring out how much light you need for your plants. For example, a ceiling mounted 250 watt system lights a growing area about 2 by 3 feet, while a 1000 watt system can cover a 7 by 7 foot area.

Changing the distance between the plants and the light can expand or contract the effective growing area and will also affect the intensity of light they receive. Always refer to the manufacturers recommendations for installation.

Fixture Features

T5 lighting fixtures are simple metal housings with built-in ballasts and power cords that need to be plugged into an adjacent outlet. They look like a range hood and can be suspended from the ceiling or mounted any way the fixture allows, as long as you can reach the mechanism to turn it on. This is usually a pull chain or toggle switch.

The size of your space and how you want to mount the fixtures are the biggest factor in determining which to buy. To mount on a ceiling, you'll need chain or wire to suspend and a power cord length that reaches your outlet. Kits with a chain included are ready to use right out of the box. If the chain isn't long enough for your needs, generic chain from the hardware store can be added.

Some fixtures can be side mounted on a wall or suspended from a frame without needing to drill holes in the ceiling. Kits with frames are an excellent choice for beginners because it takes the guesswork out of permanent mounting. Frames are adjustable, moveable and often expandable. Larger models come with wheel kits allowing plants to be kept on the floor.

Flexibility is the key when it comes to choosing a grow light system. Cheap fixtures are budget-friendly and the technology is solid enough that you don’t have to break the bank to get reliable lighting for your plants. If you're a beginner, a system with a fixture, a moveable frame and full-spectrum bulbs allows you to establish a new growing space without having to commit to a single room or type of installation.

Bulbs in specific color-spectrums can be added later, once you determine what kind of plants to grow and what they need. The more expansion options the better and you should know the length of the power cord and the location of the power switch before you buy.

There’s much more to learn about growing plants indoors, but T5 grow lights can help you start your horticultural adventure with just a few dollars and this basic know-how. Happy growing!
