Trackball Mouse Buying Guide

Trackballs have been around for a long time and were once a fairly popular alternative to traditional mice. However, with the advent of laser and optical mice, trackball mice have largely been relegated to secondary status. That does not mean that a trackball mouse does not have its place. In fact, there are several advantages that this type of mouse holds over a traditional mouse. Here, then is a primer on the pros and cons of trackball mice and who might benefit from them.

The Technology

Instead of a sensor on the bottom of the mouse that tracks movement, a trackball features a ball situated on a base. Whereas traditional mice use hand movements to manipulate motion onscreen, the trackball requires rolling of the ball.

This results in a number of advantages including:

  • Less wear and tear on the hands and wrists
  • The ability to move actions onscreen without having to reposition the mouse
  • Finer control, as the fingers are doing the movements instead of the hand and wrist

The Types of Trackball Mice

Depending upon the model, a trackball mouse might have the shape of a traditional mouse or even be something you wear on your hand like a pistol grip. There are a number of configurations that let users manipulate the ball with the thumb or fingers, and there are a few models that actually allow control of the ball with the palm.

This variety of shapes and sizes allows for users to find a trackball mouse that has a very intuitive feel. Users with larger hands may prefer the bigger ball mice that utilize palm control, while those with agile fingers may find the pistol grip style more precise.

It should be noted that most trackball mice do not possess a scrollwheel. This is because the ball is commonly placed in the scrollwheel position of a traditional mouse. Since the ball can be spun in a similar fashion to a scrollwheel, these are usually left off these mice. A couple of manufacturers do make trackball mice that have a scrollwheel by setting the ball to the side where it can only be controlled by the thumb.

What Types of Users Would Benefit from a Trackball Mouse?

Users who do a lot of video editing, audio editing, and other precision work that does not require tremendous speed or agility will find a trackball extremely useful. The control and ability to use minute movements make them perfect for these types of tasks.

A quick search of "gaming trackball mice", however, will show few results. This is because trackballs are generally not favored by gamers. While the precision is not in question, most games are designed for users of traditional mice. The raw speed that many games require make the use of a trackball difficult for all but the most adept.

By comparison, traditional mice benefit from the ability to perform quick, jerking movements of the hand and wrist. While such movements can be copied using a trackball, the level of agility required to pull them off is much higher. Many gamers who attempt to use trackball mice find themselves getting fingers or thumbs twisted or tangled in awkward positions that leave them vulnerable.

Despite this, some gamers swear by trackballs for games that require rapid movements across entire screens. This is because simply "spinning" a trackball in the correct direction moves a target across the screen at ridiculous speeds. The learning curve for performing moves such as this is steep, but the benefits can be substantial one they are mastered.

The Availability of Trackballs

Due to a simple lack of popularity, trackball mice are not nearly as common as their traditional counterparts. There are some out there, but many manufacturers of peripherals do not make them at all.

Even less common is finding a trackball as a movement device on a keyboard or laptop. The keyboards that do have them tend to be focused toward multimedia applications, such as smart TV controllers. Laptops, tablets, and the like have gone to trackpads due to the simplicity of their construction and their ability to easily allow for touch gesture inputs like stretching or shrinking an object using two fingers.

Trackball Mouse Maintenance

Back when traditional mice used a physical ball on the bottom that served as sort of an inverted trackball, the ball would eventually get dirty from rolling around on a surface. This would lead to performance issues and required the user to remove the ball from the mouse, clean the ball off, and clean the sensors that the ball touched.

Trackball mice still require this kind of maintenance, although if the user always has clean hands, this is not required as often as the old bottom-ball mice. When cleaning is required, all that needs to be done is to remove the ball and swab it with a cotton swab coated with rubbing alcohol.

Durability Considerations

Trackballs use simpler technology than many optic or laser mice, so they have better durability. Intense mouse usage, such as from gaming, can also greatly reduce the lifespan of a traditional mouse.

Part of the reason a trackball will generally last longer is due to the fact that only the ball moves. The constant movement and repositioning of a traditional mouse contribute to wear and tear, while a trackball mouse can remain in one position.

The click sensors on any mouse will wear out eventually, but as long as they are not being pounded on, these can also last a long time. It is not unheard of for a well-maintained trackball mouse to outlast a keyboard or even a computer desk.

Yes, trackball mice are a bit more difficult to find and do have a learning curve associated with them for users who are not familiar with them. However, they still represent a reasonable choice for many applications due to their durability, precision, and ability to prevent many repetitive use injuries.
