U-Lock Buying Guide

When it comes to securing your bicycle, a U-lock is one of the most secure options available on the market today. Also called a D-lock, there are several considerations that you want to keep in mind when you're shopping for a new one. We'll go over them in this buyer's guide. We'll also cover what a U-lock is and why it's useful.

U-Lock Buyer's Guide

A U-lock is a very large padlock that comes in to separate parts. It has a rigid shackle in the shape of a U. This attaches to the straight crossbar. The result is a D-shaped padlock that attaches closes to secure whatever you're attaching it to.

This lock was originally designed and manufactured in the 1970s. It gained wide popularity among contractors, the construction industry, and bicycle enthusiasts. You get the security of a hardened chain with a small fraction of the weight. This makes it a very durable and versatile option. There are several important considerations that you want to keep in mind when you're shopping for your new U-lock.

U-Lock Buying Considerations

You want to be sure that you buy the correct U-lock to suit your needs. Although they are relatively inexpensive, it's always better to get it right the first time to save time and money.

Budget

How much do you have to spend on your U-lock? Generally, even a higher-quality U-lock isn't terribly expensive. The locks start at around $20 to $30. They range in price up to over $100. You can get a very good quality U-lock for around $50 that will protect your bike from theft.

Customer Service

How easy is it to get in contact with the company's customer service representatives? Do you have to email them, call them, or can you get in touch with an online chat? How responsive are they to your questions or problems? You want to be able to get in contact with the company's representatives quickly and easily in the event that you have a problem.

Durability

U-locks are made out of a variety of different materials. Ideally, you want a lock that is made out of hardened steel. This is extremely resistant to rust, corrosion, and general wear and tear. You may also want it to have a protective plastic coating. This will stop the lock from scratching your bicycle when you use it or take it on and off.

Ease of Use

The best U-locks strike a balance between security, usability, and strength. You want to be able to easily maneuver your lock into place without using a lot of effort. It should also be easy to detach and secure to your bike when you're not using it. Also, you want it to be small enough to pick up and pack in a bag.

Frame Mount

The frame mount is a plastic bracket on the lock that secures to your bicycle's frame when you're not using it. It can clip to a variety of places on your bicycle. This is an important part to pay attention too, and many cyclists complain that it isn't as durable as the rest of the lock. You want it to fit securely to your frame without a lot of room for movement.

Portability

How often do you plan to carry your U-lock around? The size and thickness of the lock will dictate how portable it is. The frame mount also comes into play. However, this is usually made of hard plastic. It doesn't contribute to the weight as much as other components do.

Reputation

Take a look at any online reviews you can find about the U-lock in question or about the company. This will give you a good idea on whether or not your specific lock is a good choice. People will leave honest feedback, especially if they're not satisfied with their choice.

Size

The U-locks size refers to the area within the D-shaped U-lock rather than the entire lock. You may be tempted to buy the biggest one you can find, but you want to do the opposite. With these types of locks, smaller and more snug is better. The smaller size makes the smaller U-locks easier to store and carry.

It also makes it more difficult to tamper with them if there isn't a lot of excess room. The larger U-locks leave a lot of space that someone can stick a metal cutter through and simply cut the lock off. Pick a U-lock that fits as tightly as it possibly can around your bike's framework and wheel. However, it's important to note that a smaller U-lock will limit you to what you can secure your bike too.

Testing Certification

If you're looking for a U-lock specifically to secure your bicycle, make sure that it has a bike lock testing certification. If the company has this certification, the lock will display a ranking of gold, silver, or bronze. Gold is the most secure certification a lock can have, but it's also the heaviest lock.

Thickness

The thickness of your U-lock refers to the overall size of the D-shaped shackle part of the lock. They come in three different thickness levels, and the one you choose depends on your personal preferences. The thicker locks will weight more and be bulkier.

  • 13mm or Less - The thinnest U-locks have a 13mm diameter. This is a popular option. Unfortunately, this is also the diameter that is most susceptible to cutting by bolt cutters. They're thin enough to cut easily. There is also enough room to get bolt cutters through easily.
  • 13 to 15mm - The second size for U-locks is 13 to 15mm in diameter. These are good sizes because they're not extremely bulky or heavy. They're also more resistant to bolt cutting. They can be cut by the larger bolt cutters, but most thieves won't carry these around.
  • 16 to 18mm - The thickest sizes you can buy with U-locks is 16 to 18mm. These sizes are favored by construction companies and contractors. You can use them for bicycle locks as well. However, they're very heavy, bulky, and impractical when you have to carry them around.
  • Warranty

Some bicycle locks come with a warranty on the lock and theft protection that caps at a certain amount. This is an excellent feature to look for because some bicycles can easily cost upwards of $1,000 and over. The warranty should offer a replacement lock in the event that yours fails or corrodes.

    Weatherproofing

You want your U-lock to last for years. This is especially true if you spend more on it when you buy it. It should be designed to be weatherproof so it can withstand winds, rain, sleet, and snow without rusting or corroding. Pay close attention to the barrel and where you insert the key. These can be weak points when it comes to weatherproofing.
