Womens Tool Set Buying Guide

When Slate.com ran an article about the status of the women’s do-it-yourself movement, who better to profile in the cleverly-titled “Drill Baby Drill” feature than Ana White? She not only authors one of the best carpentry blogs on the planet, but White regales readers with humorous stories about how she suffered a fear of power tools despite her ability to build a house from the ground up if need be.

“I’m not a trained carpenter,” says Ana who cut her teeth crafting doll furniture and now teaches other women to build shelves, tables and walls. But among her biggest missions is working to empower women and convince them that they can follow in her footsteps. Among her most important advice? You need the right tools. She recommends starting slowly by investing in affordable, basic tools—and they don’t have to be pink!

Why women are buying tools more often than ever

Serena Appiah’s husband couldn’t understand why his wife began doing a happy dance after learning about a local woodworking symposium. “Can’t you just be normal??” he sighed, knowing that no answer would be forthcoming from a wife who refers to herself as “a power-tool-wielding, sawdust-covered, cargo-pants-wearing, thrift-store-shopping, furniture-paintin’, plaid-shirt-sportin’ mom and wife.”

Appiah believes that the emergence of women as carpenters, builders and DIYers is a direct result of women becoming empowered in general. A generation of females no longer hand projects over to men, taking on the challenges themselves. Further, economics generates and motivates women to push rehab boundaries. The ability to undertake basic repairs is empowering, says today’s woman.

In fact, the manufacturer of Brawny paper towels recognized this fast-growing trend, launching a Strength Has No Gender campaign that encourages women to take on the most daunting projects around the house, whether those jobs are plumbing, electrical work or carpentry. But in order to accomplish these jobs, women need tools—and if you’re about to shop, we’ve got good news: you don’t have to spend a fortune to get them.

Must you buy new tools?

Because you’re just starting out, a great money-saving idea is to check out thrift shops. According to the DIY Network, no woman has to settle for inferior brands because garage sales, thrift shops and other second-hand outlets frequently have top-of-the-line tools with prestigious brand names for a fraction of their retail cost.

Used tools are even considered fashionable, because they contribute to the sustainability movement. Thrift shops aren’t your only resource. Women go online every day to participate in tool auctions, and there’s no reason you can’t bid on a relatively new tool that's selling at a fraction of its retail price. Concerned that you may not know whether a tool is a good value? Check out UsedPrice.com.

10 items that make a great starter tool set

Can you purchase a tool set that’s already compiled and comes with a sturdy box? Of course. You can even find them in colors like pink, marketed to women who find the soft shade to be familiar and comforting. But whether you troll thrift shops and garage sales or buy retail, take this list of basics with you to get your collection started:

1. A basic screwdriver set comprised of both flat- and Phillips-head styles.
2. A hefty claw hammer. This Old House’s Bob Vila recommends one that weighs about a pound and features a 16-inch handle that’s rubber, vinyl or plastic for the best grip.
3. Locking, adjustable pliers (standard 5-to-10W) that act as clamps, wire cutters and more.
4.Adjustable crescent wrenches are invaluable.
5. Add a 16-foot(L) x ¾-inch(W) tape measure.
6. A 3- to 4-foot metal level is essential, particularly laser levels.
7. Get a utility knife with a rubber-covered handle and built-in blade storage.
8. Choose a flashlight for tight, dark spaces (try on one that’s worn like a headband across the forehead).
9. An electric drill (12-volt should do). Will it be corded or battery-operated? Your choice.
10. A hacksaw that cuts through wood, metal and plastic and allows you to replace blades easily.

If you still have money in your tool budget, add:

-Safety goggles -Work gloves -Duct tape -WD-40 oil -Shop rags

If you haven’t the time or desire to pick out each tool, consider pre-packed cases that contain some or all of these items. Pre-packed kits come in all price ranges and you can get good deals on them when hardware stores and chains put them on sale or clear them out. Tool manufacturers cater to women re-habbers more and more, so if you’re juggling kids, a job and PTA meetings, a pre-packed collection can be a lifesaver.

Manual versus power tools

PopularWoodworking.com is a favorite of neophytes just getting their DIY projects underway, so it stands to reason that this site would tackle this often-asked question: Is it better to own manual or power tools? The answer, of course, is both. So many of the projects you will undertake around the house will be relatively simple, calling for screwdrivers, hammers, tape measure and perhaps a wrench to tackle quick-fix issues.

But if you only have room in your tool kit for one power tool, women from all walks of life enthusiastically endorse the battery-operated screw driver. You’ll save time and frustration and frankly, once you become accustomed to this handy tool, you’re going to fall in love.

Don’t be surprised if the urge to upgrade to a more-sophisticated screwdriver with interchangeable bits winds up on your holiday wish list. This tool allows you to move effortlessly from drywall installation to furniture building and everything in-between.

Which companies make the best power tools?

These tool companies have not only been around a long time, built reputations and stand behind their products, but whether you buy them new or used, you can assume that you’ll be able to rely upon them for decades: -Bosch -Craftsman -Delta -DeWalt -Hitachi -Husqvarna -Makita -Milwaukee -Porter-Cable -Poulan -Ridgid -Ryobi -Skil -Stihl

What if I fall in love with my tools?

It can happen! One guy swears his wife loves her tools more than she loves him because over the years, she has gone from pounding nails and hanging shelves to tackling formidable projects around the house. Be forewarned, you could find yourself asking for tools rather than jewelry down the road, so if you become invested in repair and construction, you could find yourself lusting after:

-A stud finder (this has nothing to do with eligible men!). -A library of wrenches that include these types: socket; Allen; pipe. -A ratcheting screwdriver allowing you to turn screws clockwise, counter-clockwise and at 90-degree angles. -A selection of pliers that let you do everything from fix jewelry to cut wire for electrical tasks. -Putty knives and chisels that make quick work of old paint, wallpaper and distressed wood. -A crosscut saw that officially welcomes you into the realm of master DIYer. -Add a step ladder, staple gun, rubber mallet and crowbar and you can compete with any handy guy on earth!

What are the pros and cons of becoming a “handy woman”?

Having applied due diligence to your search for hands-on training and after building a respectable tool collection, you may put your feet up and take stock of the reasons you jumped in and became a DIY queen:

Pros -The amount of money you save by cutting back on contractors will thrill you. -You teach your daughters, nieces and girlfriends that one can wear a tool belt and still be feminine. -Your self-confidence can reach heights you only dreamed about when you started doing small fixes. -You become a valuable resource to your church, Habitat for Humanity and community projects, too.

Cons -You can no longer claim that you can't fix something because you just had your nails done. -The guy in your life could feel threatened. He'll get over it first time he sees you tape drywall. -Your neighbors may start calling you at all hours when they have emergencies. It comes with the territory.

What’s the biggest con of all? You could become a tool addict, but until Tool Owners Anonymous meetings are held in your community, you’re going to have to find other women in the vicinity who are as enthusiastic as you are about the limitless potential you enjoy as a result of your ability to use every tool in your collection!
