Join us for the first Battle of the Trees this tournament, pitting the last year's Champion of the Plants, the Red Maple (Acer rubrum) against the up and coming Bitternut Hickory (Carya cordiformis).
For some, the Red Maple is the patriotic choice. Its leaf adorns our flag, and it along with its cousin the Sugar Maple, provide the maple syrup that many of us enjoy with our weekend breakfasts. And who doesn't appreciate the tree's colourfull leaves that add so much to our autumn palatte?
But don't discount the Bitternut Hickory (Carya cordiformis), which is a favoured tree for our reforestation plantings here at rare. This hardest of our hardwood trees is native to this area, and its nuts feed many of our local animals. As we restore more of our natural areas, we hope to restore more of these special trees to our area forests.
So, should the national symbol beat out this local species? It's all up to you, so vote now below.
