Our latest match-up is a Battle of the Bats (much to the delight of Dan Riskin, we hope, who hosts his Conversation for Conservation on Beautiful Bats on Wednesday, March 27 - reserve your FREE seat here: https://raresites.org/events/c4c-2024-03/), as the Tricolored Bat (Perimyotis subflavus) faces off against the Eastern small-footed myotis (Myotis leibii).
The Tricolored Bat is probably emerging from hibernation as we speak, taking shelter in caves, mines, and dark cozy places within buildings. In summer, the roost in trees and on buildings, feasting on insects found near water or at the edges of forests. This species is vulnerable, especially due to a fungus which causes white nose syndrome. Organizations are asking private land owners to help support the protection and recovery of the species. The Eastern small-footed myotis is a bat that's currently endangered in the wild. It's also threatened by white nose syndrome, and the Ontario Government has put together a recovery strategy. People are asked to stay out of non-commercial caves and abandoned mines where bats may be present. You could also build a bat box for your property. Both these species can use your help, and you can learn more about how to help them here: https://thebackyardnaturalist.com/wordpress/resources/how-to-support-bats/. In the meantime, only one of these two can advance, so cast your vote for your favourite species below.
