It's about time damselflies and moths got featured in March Species Madness. This battle pits the Ebony Jewelwing against the more down-to-earth Tufted Bird-Dropping Moth.
Damselflies are closely related to dragonflies, but while they share many characteristics, they have some differences as well (this source identifies a few characteristics, as well as providing other information: https://www.thoughtco.com/difference-between-a-dragonfly-and-a-damselfly-1968359). The ebony jewelwing is a fast-moving predator that hovers over streams and ponds, while providing an important source of food for fish, amphibians and birds. You'll see these creatures this summer and marvel at their acrobatics.
You may have difficulty seeing the Tufted Bird-Dropping Moth, and clue to the reason why is in its name. Its mottled colours provide excellent camouflage as it waits out predators. You can learn more about this interesting creature here: https://www.inaturalist.org/guide_taxa/1852998
Which species would you like to spot this summer? The answer may be 'both', but only one can advance to the next round of March Species Madness, and only you can decide which species that is. Cast your votes now:
