Our next matchup in Round 2 is a Battle of the Trees, as the Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) faces off against the Bitternut Hickory (Carya cordiformis).
The Bur Oak sailed to a clear Round 1 victory against the 2022 Champion of the Plants the Trout Lily, winning 8-3. There are few things as solid or iconic as an oak tree. We use it for our houses and furniture. We plant it to shade our parks and cities. Note the picture by Peter Kelly of a solitary oak tree in a field at rare. There are plenty more photos where that came from. They're versatile, able to grow in sun and shade, which is how they can establish themselves in open fields and grow into great forests. But don't count out the Bitternut Hickory (Carya cordiformis). It provides food and shelter for wildlife, and the wood is often used for crafting. It is also a tree we use often here at rare when we replant to restore natural lands. It's native to this area, and ensuring it has a place in our forests is key to maintaining local biodiversity.
It's a shame that only one of these trees can make it to the quarter finals, but that's the rules. It's up to you to decide who goes forward and who stays home, so cast your ballots now!
