Our final quarterfinal matchup determines the winner of the Birds/Flying Insects bracket as the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) faces off against the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus), a real David and Goliath battle, here.
The Osprey is faster, heavier, and a respected Bird of Prey. It defeated the Cedar Waxwing in Round 1, and upset the Great Horned Owl (last year's finalist) to advance. We're proud to host osprey at rare, and you may spot some in their nesting tower off of our Osprey Trail.
But has there ever been a more respected underdog than the Monarch Butterfly? It's multigenerational migration pattern from Canada to Mexico, its dependence on particular breeding grounds, and its sensitivity to habitat destruction have brought many people to take up its cause, planting milkweed, caring for cocoons, doing whatever we can to help this species along. We hate to think of a world where the Monarchs aren't a part of it, and could this sentiment propel this creature into the Final Four?
