Our second match of the day pits the 2022 Champion of the Birds, the Cedar Waxwing, against the well-known newcomer, the Osprey. The Cedar Waxwing is known for its silky brown/grey/yellow plumage and its aerial acrobatics as it catches the flying insects it eats. It can be seen near rivers, but also at the edges of fields and in backyards if berries are available to eat. Learn more about this bird and how you can attract it to your backyard here: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Cedar_Waxwing/maps-range If you see an Osprey in your backyard, it's unlikely that it's there for your berries. This bird of prey loves fish, and can dive out of the sky up to 30 metres into water to catch them. Their unique adaptations for underwater hunting include waterproof feathers and a transparent membrane they can pull over their eyes to they can see underwater, like built-in goggles. Able to reach speeds of up to 129 km/h when diving, Osprey are among the fastest birds in the world. Learn more about these fascinating creatures here: https://www.hww.ca/en/wildlife/birds/osprey.html We love to host both these creatures on our natural lands, but only one can progress to the next round. To decide which one goes forward, cast your ballot now.
