In 2023, the River Otter won the Mammal bracket and the Consolation Final of the final four. It returns to face a winner of the First Four wild cards, the northern flying squirrel. Cuteness rules in this matchup, so will aerial superiority win out against naval expertise?
The River Otter had a hard time of it through the 19th century, hunted for its fur, and suffering from habitat destruction and fragmentation. However, ongoing conservation efforts have stabilized this species and numbers are steadily increasing. Flying squirrils don't fly. They don't have wings, and they don't flap their arms like bats. Instead, they jump from trees, and use wide flaps of skin to between their legs to glide through the forest canopy. But they do have other superpowers, however: including large eyes for excellent night vision, and the ability to glow under ultraviolet light. This was a recent discovery, and scientists aren't yet sure why these flying squirrils have this characteristic. So, will the River Otter return to the Final Four, or will the Northern Flying Squirrel glide to victory? The decision is up to you, and your votes!
