Who Should Win it All?

by James Bow · 1 year ago
This is it! After a whole month of matches, we have whittled 34 species down to two: the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes), the champion of 2022, and a quarterfinalist in 2023, is back in the final. Pitted against it is a newcomer to the tournament, the Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis), which toppled the 2022 Champion of the Reptiles (the Spring Peeper) and last year's champion (the Turtles of rare) to arrive here. We hope that you've had fun following this tournament of species, but we also hope that we've helped raise some awareness of the species that exist at rare, and near where you live. Some are doing well, while some are threatened. In real life, they would never deserve to be pitted against each other. They deserve their space -- habitats where they can live and thrive -- and it is in the interest of our sustainable health and well-being that we give them this space. Support your local land trusts and conservation groups. Speak out for the plants, animals, fungi and others. Give nature its space, so that we can live healthily and sustainably in our spaces within the environment. In the meantime, you have until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday to cast your ballot for one of these finalists. No joke: the winner of March Species Madness will be announced Monday morning.
