This match pits amphibian against fish in the drive for the Reptiles/Amphibian/Fish bracket of March Species Madness. The Grey Tree Frog (Dryophytes versicolor) faces off against the Rainbow Darter (Etheostoma caeruleum), with the winner to face either the Turtles of rare or the Eastern Garter Snake.
The Gray Tree Frog is here having beaten the Four-toed Salamander. This creature has excellent camouflage abilities, able to change colour in response to its environment. It also has a blotchy pattern on its back to resemble lichen on stone or tree bark. Like the Spring Peeper, while you may not see this creature, you'll certainly hear it, as it calls after dusk during its spring breeding season. Did you know that the Grey Tree Frog is one of 7 species of tree frogs found in Canada? You can learn more about these creatures here: https://naturecanada.ca/news/blog/canadas-7-species-of-treefrogs/
The Rainbow Darter arrives at Round 2 having defeated the Creek Chub to become the Champion of the Fishes. Were supporters impressed by its bright colours, or charmed by its small stature, or the fact that it's an indicator species, found where the waters are clean. Kathy Johnson of Great Lakes Now is a fan, calling these creatures "the prettiest fish in the Great Lakes": https://www.greatlakesnow.org/2022/07/i-speak-for-the-fish-taking-the-measure-of-a-rainbow-darter/
I think these are both beautiful creatures that deserve their space. Only one can advance to the quarter finals, however, so cast your ballots now:
