The Red Fox, 2022 champion ousted in 2023 by the River Otter, got its revenge by defeating the River Otter to advance to the quarterfinals of March Species Madness. Is another victory possible for this cute but canny predator?
Facing the Red Fox is a newcomer to the tournament, the Eastern Small-Footed Myotis, an underdog bat that beat its tricolored cousin and then the six-spotted tiger beetle to make it this far. This bat has its supporters (among them likely Dan Riskin, who presents on bats this coming Wednesday - register to see him at https://raresites.org/events/c4c-2024/03), so it cannot be counted out. It may be time for a bat to take its place in the final four.
Whoever you decide should win this match-up, both species deserve our respect and protection, and we hope you will join us in ensuring more lands are protected as refuges for nature, now and in the future.
