Which of Brahms’ Orchestral Works are your Favorite?

by troop91 · 2 years ago
Johannes Brahms occupies a unique spot in the history of music. He can be seen a through-and-through romantic composer ; he can similarly be seen as the last classical composer. His musical intuition was very forward looking, but unlike those of the New German School, Brahms did not think the classical style dead. Perhaps it had reached its apex in Beethoven, but it is still a living dynamic mode of expression deserving of a fresh expression which he expected of himself to take up. Unlike his idols, Brahms wrote comparatively few works. But this is no admission of low effort nor poor quality. Arriving at orchestral music fairly young, He wrote his first orchestral work at the age of 25 and his last at the age of 54. In this time he had risen from an insecure composer to one of the greats remembered today alongside those he idolized. Pick up to 10 of his orchestral works below which you find the most appealing. This poll is more or less a redo of the ones I did on Reddit in December of 2021, now with all the opinions present in one large poll, hopefully the results can be more accurate! Expect a similar poll for Schumann to appear soon. Thanks for voting and be sure to check back for more rankings of this kind. Do message me if you think of any rankings you would like to see!
