The design features nine stripes, paying respect to the nine native tribes that signed the Treaty of Medicine Creek, those being the Nisqually, Puyallup, Steilacoom, Squawskin, S'Homamish, Stehchass, T'Peeksin, Squi-aitl, and Sa-heh-wamish. The blue and off-white pattern additionally symbolizes the flag of Greece, as Olympia’s name comes from the Olympic Mountains, which in turn were named for the Greek Mount Olympus. Finally, the stripes symbolize Olympia’s shores on Budd Inlet. The green field represents Washington, the Evergreen State, of which the city is the capital. The shade of green chosen is similar to that of the state flag, with the green additionally representing Evergreen State College. Finally, the green represents nature, and the forests surrounding Olympia. The icon in the upper hoist side of the flag forms an O, for the city’s name, with the star symbolizing prominence and energy. The star, split into four peaks, additionally symbolizes the mountains surrounding Olympia, arrowheads, used for hunting, and progress. The location of the icon represents Olympia’s location in western Washington, as well as the state’s location in the pacific northwest of the country.
