If you're a video game developer, why don't you release your source code?

Video games are a very prominent part of our culture in this day and age. However, there isn't much that can be done to preserve old games for replays or future audiences because of copyright, and the fact that video games are interactive. One of the best ways to preserve a video game is to release its source code, so that not only can it work on next-gen platforms, but also be ported to other platforms. However, most game developers never release their source code, even if the game is so old, that people experience a myriad of technical issues trying to play it on modern platforms. I would like to write a guest article about this for GamingOnLinux.com, and I only have some rough guesses and some quotes pertaining to why game developers almost never release their source code. So I would like to hear the reasons from the developers themselves.
